the 529 plan, that can only be used for college, so what happens if the kid doesnt' go to college? what's the penalty for taking the money for yourself?

My dad paid for my private school K-12 and said when i left the house the grocery bill went down. I had TOPS so all he paid for was my books and gave me $400/month for rent and food. That worked for me the first year, since i had a good bit of money from graduation saved up, and then i got a job and started paying for the fun things myself.

My kids are 3 and 1, so who knows what college will be like in 15+ years. Haven't started saving for the yet, but plan on it soon.

They paid for a private school education from K-12 and it was up to me to pay for college.

Private school tuition is expensive. If you go private K-12, you should be able to get a free ride somewhere for that kind of money. If not, I don't understand spending that type of money, aside from a religious aspect. K-12 tuition is the cost of college.
