do you keep a detailed inventory of your personal property inside of your home incase of a fire? is this needed for insurance companies or do they just pay you the full amount of your policy after a fire?

In most cases you will have to list item by item, room by room. It is good to take photos of all your rooms from time to time and keep them offsite...

I don't have anything of unusual value, like a coin collection or a vase from King Tut's tomb. I'm not gonna take pictures of my sofa, bed and dining room table. I think they'll take my word for it.

The only thing I have inventoried is my guns. They are covered in a separate policy. I guess it wouldn't hurt to do the pics and inventory on the rest of the house.

But you have to remember what you have to get paid. That is not easy when you are listing EVRYTHING in your house. The pictures will help you remember...

All of my assets are verifiable from other sources. The value of the structural home, cars, bank accounts, stocks, etc.
The stuff in my house is cheap...clothes, basic furniture, cheap silver ware, basic appliances.

The only unusual thing would be books. I've got about 2,000 on shelves against almost every wall. Place looks like a library. No real monetary value. In fact, they would be the major cause of a fire.

I keep a video log of my home contents yearly. I keep a copy of the video in my safe and in my safety deposit box both of which are north of I-12.

Pics are a life-saver, it is definitely worth taking a few every couple of years. Insurance companies are fricking savages when it comes time to write a check. You will also not get full replacement value on anything that is over a few years old, because they depreciate everything, even your underwear!

Good info. I'll go through and take some photos.

I'll also write down serial numbers and model.

So, if your house burned down you would claim your underwear as an asset due compensation?

It is covered... All those little things will add up, thus need for pictures or video to assist in the claim...

I keep a list of appliances, electronics, furniture, etc. Big ticket items I have a receipt for.

i take pictures and keep them in dropbox. I know people that keep the pictures/lists in their houses. That may help in the event of theft, but fire will destroy the pics/list as well. My pics in dropbox will be there even if my laptops, desktops, phones, tablets, and cameras are destroyed.

Oh. Well, I've got about $150 worth in my closet. So I'm not taking any pictures. I can cover it with a check.
