Been shopping quotes for a new home purchase. Premiums have been higher than I was expecting. Anyone have any good companies to look into? I've gotten quotes so far from State Farm, farm bureau, and Liberty mutual. Waiting to hear back from a broker for additional quotes

Centauri is doing good things in the area.

Beware of "Wind and Hail" deductibles versus "Hurricane Duration" deductibles.
In south Louisiana, wind and hail cause 95% of homeowner claims whereas a named HURRICANE (not a named storm but a HURRICANE, deductible, although larger, works to your advantage because it lasts the entire year and applies to multiple claims for that period.
Policies which read "wind/hail" deductible frick over the insured big time.
Think back to 2005 - Hurricane Cindy in July, Katrina in August, and Rita in September. If you lived near New Orleans, you received damage to all three hurricanes. Imagine paying three wind/hail deductibles.
Centauri, ASI, Access, Safeco, among other smaller companies charge lower rates for a reason. Remember that.
USAA has a wind/hail deductible but given their supreme rates and service, I'd recommend them. After USAA, I'd say State Farm.
If you don't qualify for either of those companies, cross your fingers with another company while waiting to qualify.

Damn. I have ASI.
They do send free smoke detector batteries
But sounds like I'm fricked if a hurricane comes.

ASI rates have gone up a lot in the last few years. They are not competitive anymore. You need to find an agent that has every single independent company writing. Companies that may have the best rate there are UPC, Maison, Family Security...etc. DM me and I can help you out.

This is completely false. These companies along with many independent companies are great companies and backed by the state. They are no differ t than the big names expect you will end up with a better rate and better coverage.

Well play fair... that's completely false too.
Are you going to pretend maison is as solvent as liberty mutual?
They are NOT the same.

No I am not but both companies are backed by the State of Louisiana guarantee fund, which states that the state will step in and pay a claim of a company that they back goes insolvent. So the consumer has nothing to worry about. Not only that but consumers fall I love with the big names and fail to realize they are screwing them with high rates and most importantly high deductibles. Your company definitely does not matter when you have a 3%, 5% hurricane, named storm, or wind/hail deductible.
The consumer has nothing to worry about with most of these companies if they are backed by the state. Companies like UPC, ASI, and other independent companies are not cheap for a reason. They have better rates and better coverages than the big name companies that have abandoned the southern portion of our state. If you go get a policy from Allsate, State Farm, Farm Berau then your going to end up with a split policy. The wind\hail would be with LA Citizens(the worst company in rates, claims, etc.) These companies have abandoned the state and I re-write customers with these companies almost every day now. Once explained the customer realizes how bad of a situation they were in.

No.

Let me know how claim time goes before the small company goes insolvent though. With some companies, your best bet is for that company to go insolvent just so your claim can be paid. If it doesn't go insolvent they will try everything to get out of paying your claim. I've seen it many many times.
The guarantee fund is only something to rely on for peace of mind with life insurance. Not P&C.

Anyone have any experience with Horace Mann Insurance? I've heard if you qualify for them, they usually have good rates.
Posted on 5/3/16 at 9:52 am to Glock17
They have pretty decent rates but I don't have any idea how they are at paying claims.
When you buy insurance, you're buying convenience at claim time. That's they key to remember when shopping for insurance.

no actually they haven't. you are likely having your discounts reduced past few years.

Actually yes, they have. I've called my agent and called ASI themselves. I've been a Progressive Car Insurance Customer for over 10 years and have been an ASI Customer since we closed on our home. The rates are going up significantly this year and nothing has happened with my home. I'm 12" above BFE per the ordinance within the city limits of my city here in South Louisiana. As is the lowest adjacent grade. I've got both the Elevation Cert and the LOMA to prove it.
ASI's going up.

What year construction is your house?
Posted on 5/3/16 at 7:55 pm to GFunk
My 3rd year with ASI in Lafayette south of I-10...no change.
Posted on 5/3/16 at 8:44 pm to GFunk
I have ASI and I'm south of I-10. Last year my premium went up 350 dollars after only increasing 150 dollars the previous 5 years. Now this year to my surprise my premium has decreased 350 dollars. And I didn't call to ask why.

So cheaper rates equal better coverage? Good luck with the cheap rates when shite goes down and your left high and dry. Fighting for help for your claim and looking for a new company.
Those companies are not "backed" by the state. They have agreements to insure people in the state, but to say they are backed by the state is wrong.
So decide what you want from a company and use them. If $100-$300 a year and a 2-5% wind/hail deductibles bother you or you don't give a shite who your agent is. Use imperial or ASI, both are A rated by AM Best
If you want to have a relationship with your agent and not worry about the company leaving after a major event then use one of the big 3 in the state. Farm bureau (2%) or all state/State Farm (5%). Farm bureau is A rated as well... Not sure about SF or AS as far as rating.

I will say this. A client of mine with Liberty Mutual had his house burn to ground last month (April 5th). Total loss, and his house and contents insured for roughly 1M. Based on our market blowing up and his house value increasing, while he could easily rebuild again for that value, its not fair market value for the area. The adjuster recommended 1.3M for his loss, they are funding the account on Friday, demo starts on his teardown on Monday.
May never happen to you, but to know this is how a company behaves when this situaton arises is money well spent IMO.
