Help with setting up business to accept credit cards

I have a contracting business and we currently only accept cash/check. About 99% of our revenue is contract work, so the credit card volume will be very limited but we would like to get setup for the few times customers come in needing odds and ends.
Obviously I have no idea where to start. Any suggestions? Things to look out for? Reputable companies?
Thanks

Is the iphone adapter/service the way to go these days? I mentioned this to some folks in the office and they said they would rather have a traditional setup but they, like me, are clueless when it comes to this sort of thing.

unless you are doing a lot of volume, the traditional set up will eat you up in fees, how many times a day and for what $ amount do you plan on processing cards?
Square and like setups are not good for large amount transactions bc of the 2.75% fee, on smaller transactions it is no big deal

I just read up on Square and I think that is going to be the path we take. We will use it very rarely. Probably less then 100 times a year. And that might even be stretching it. Its just to process payment for walk-ins that need odds and ends that cost a few hundred dollars.
My one question that I havent been able to find an answer on yet is in regards to receipts. I need to be able to give the customer a receipt after I have processed the transaction. How is this accomplished with Square ?
eta: nevermind. found that the receipt is sent via email.
Another question, who are Square's direct competitors?
