Have You Ever Contested a CC Charge b/c It Was Just Kinda... bullshite?

I rented a Kia Optima at DFW from Avis to drive to Tulsa when my connecting flight left without me Monday night. I got the car at midnight and drove until 5 a.m. when I dropped it back off at the Tulsa airport. Being delirious I neglected to fill the tank, but did note that it was slightly more than half full.
Now I get my receipt: $137.22 for fuel service. On top of the $295 they charged me to rent a fricking Kia for 5 hours. On a business level I can respect the hustle of a $9.30/gal fuel service charge. It's right there in the pamphlet no one reads in size 6 font but still. I signed it.
My issue is that a 2015 Kia Optima has a 18.5 gallon tank. Even at $9.30/gallon they're charging me for 14.5 gallons when it was left with half a tank. I've called Avis and they wouldn't give me any more information than my receipt does - which is just the dollar amount charged. Do I dare get AmEx involved and call shenanigans?

1. Find rate codes with no drop fees for one way trips.
2. I'd call the airport location not the 1-800 number and see if they'll adjust the amount to the proper tank level. If not challenge that portion with Amex.

They give you a contract up front and a check in slip when you turn it in.

At 5 a.m. you drop the keys and contract in the drop-box. No slip, no final receipt, no employee to monitor for accuracy.

Did you really go into this with no idea the potential cost? And now you are upset it was expensive?

What are you going to contest? You drove about 270miles in a car that gets 30mpg

I don't think he's upset at the cost. But the over-charge on the fuel amount. I always fill up my rental cars right near the airport. Sometimes the gauge doesn't go all the way to full and they want to charge me for 1/4 tank at $9/gal when it may need 1/16 of a tank or nothing at all.

If you can't make it to the 3rd short paragraph of a post, stick to the OT.

That's exactly what I did. If you do that math, that's 9 gallons. I was charged for 14.5. Which seems silly to bitch about but it's more than $50.

I would absolutely dispute it. That's what it's there for.

The $137 probably covers the trouble to fill the tank up, not just the cost of the fuel itself.

1) they don't actually fill the tank up
2) I'm pretty sure that is covered In the 300% mark up on the fuel.

If it's going on my expense report and I'm getting reimbursed I probably don't bother.
If it's coming out of my pocket I absolutely dispute it
Only BS charge I've ever disputed was cover at a strip club. I paid cover for about 10 people and before we even sat down the lights came on and they announced they were closed. It was less than 2 minutes and that a-hole at the door said no refunds
I told him on my way out I was going to dispute charge and he said good luck....I got my money back

1) anecdotal
2) that's exactly what I said

Don't they just charge you for a full tank regardless of what amount you left in the tank when you're too dumb to fill it back up before dropping it off?

Airport locations they do.

Whats it say on the rental agreement? It should say what the cost is per gallon if you don't return it full
On my last vaca, I just went ahead and paid the pre-fill charge. It was like 2.21 a gallon. I made sure I returned it with less than 10miles left in the tank.
Got every cent worth.

Not in my experience. I have rented a couple of cars at Avis @ DEN that didn't have full tanks. I have no learned to check when I get in the car because there was no documentation of my half tank the first time. I had to get the gate attendant to give me something in writing on my way out.

I rented over 30 times last year from airports. Once I didn't have a full tank and it was at 7/8ths and that was because it was dropped off from the dealership about 20 minutes before I drove it away.

AMEX will refund anything under $300 with no questions asked generally. Call them, dispute it and never think of it again.
