I know this is a common topic on here, but I applied for THIS card and got denied because I didn't have an established credit history (which is funny, because the card is marketed to help students build credit).

I talked to a representative and he suggested that I get a secured MasterCard, but I don't want to pay a stupid annual fee. Any idea why I got denied for this card, or any suggestions for another card to apply for? I'm basically just wanting to build my credit at this point.

You will get an adverse action letter in the mail in a couple of days stating the exact reasons you were probably denied.

Its been so long, but why not just suck up the annual fee once? You will have offers rolling in once you establish a credit line and keep it in good standing

I guess it was stupid how I worded it. I was really just confused why they would deny me for not having a credit history, when the card is clearly marketed towards students who don't have a credit history.

If you have no credit at all and try to apply for a credit card, there is a good chance you will get denied with the reasoning being you have a "thin file" (in essence no credit history.

What NOT to do: Keep applying for cards that are out of your credit range. You will get denied and due to the inquiries on your credit report, your score will be lower every time you get denied.

What you SHOULD do: Don't simply go on the internet and apply for every card. Go online and do the research. I found a low limit credit card with minimal annual fee's that gives cash back on groceries/gas (Cap one). I got this one when i had zero credit, paid off every month to avoid the high interest charges, and now i have a decent credit score one year removed from college.

Talking to a representative would be better than just applying online. Normally you can explain your situation, and they will give you a better idea of whether or not you will be approved before you essentially apply. Good luck

Posted in another credit card thread...hope it helps.

ETA: I'm skeptical that you got denied for a credit card tailored for people building credit/no credit at all. Good idea in talking to a rep though. I made the mistake of applying for two different credit cards before doing all the research and subsequently got denied by both (and for good reason). Capital One has a couple cards for students/people just trying to build credit. My first credit card only had a 300$ limit, but all i really wanted it for were for gas and groceries anyway

I've posted this before. Here's what I did.

No one would approve me for a credit card. I work full-time at a good paying job, but the problem was I had no credit and the recent market BS made it impossible.

I ended up getting a Cap One secured credit card. $49 deposit and a $200 limit (max $200 deposit, $500 limit). I don't need anything higher than that. I made a few purchases a month and paid them off right away. Last month Cap One offered to bump me up to a real credit card.

The 50 bucks or so is probably worth it in the long run.
