What are you guys thoughts on the general income stocks that pay higher divs?
I have most of my stuff tied up in things like CO and SO but wanted to see about funneling some new cash into things like DHF, PHK etc that pay 8-12% div for income purposes.

Those are great as long as you aren't holding the bag when they cut dividends and the stock price falls too.
My advice with dividends is value the company without dividend. If the company is still a decent or slightly overpriced investment the dividend makes up for it or is a free bonus

I bought several high-flying dividend stocks. When the oil dropped from $100 to $40, they went bankrupt.

Looking at a current dividend payout alone is short sighted. It's a complex dynamic. Several companies I've owned have cut or dumped the payout.
There are several stocks I've owned over the years and the dividend messed up my evaluation of when to dump the stock. I would say over all its best not to judge the stock too heavily based on the dividend. Ask yourself if you would own that stock even without it.
