I am currently a financial analyst in Baton Rouge, mainly on the management consulting and PE side of things. I have around 4 years exp. with an MBA. I have been looking to make a move over the last year for various reasons. I have been using monster and indeed to find jobs. But there is few and far between as for quaility jobs. Most appear to only be from large companies. I have had several interviews over the last 6 months with three offers. Most have been with the larger companies in baton rouge, but most have been more on the techinical side in more of a numbers only role- which I am trying to get away from a pure sit behind a desk and run excel models life. I have had good $ offered, not great. Want to find something mixed business and finance.

1.Anyone have a better resource for finding jobs?
2.Does anyone know where the mid to small business find talent?
3. Anyone have any recommendations for fields to move into?

Suggestion:

Move. (Or at the least, look elsewhere.)

Use the alumni database from your MBA and/or undergrad.

Moving has been considered, but my whole family is from and lives in BR. I want to stay for many reasons.

I went to high school in BR but, college/masters out of state. I currently work for a college alumni, but went to a smaller school.

Question, for those in the finance sector - what type of work do you do and do you like it? what size company do you work for?

TIA

When I was in college I interned with a business unit as a financial analyst and got a job offer. If I hadn't had other opportunities come up, it would have been a great gig. I was deep in the numbers analyzing projects and assisting for budgeting/forecasting (standard FP&A role), but it was a good mix of analysis to go along with business/operational strategy discussions.

Sounds like you are looking for a similar role?

The whole BR thing complicates that.

Yep. I was going to suggest maybe Houston, Dallas or Atlanta for a few years to at least get started.

I recently considered the "move back to Louisiana and find a finance job" thing. As much as it pains me to say it (I love my home state), the opportunities are few and far between. For me, expanding and sharpening my skillset was my biggest priority, and I just didn't feel like the opportunities that presented themselves in LA compared with the opportunities elsewhere. I will say, however, that one avenue I did not pursue that I do think would have allowed me to be pushed as far as I wanted is corporate finance. You ought to reach out to the many publicly-traded companies across the state and see if there is any need for what you have to offer.

This may be a good place to start:
