Does any of the CPAs on this board have experience as a financial analyst? I'm considering applying for a job as a financial analyst with a large healthcare provider and was curious to see what everyone's thoughts were. Some of the responsibilities are:
Providing reports to ensure profitability
Responsible for reporting of statistical information
Other pretty basic stuff.
TIA

You could literally be doing anything. I was a financial analyst in the IT division of a large hospital network. I tracked capital expenses and hours vs. project budget and approved/assigned invoices as capital or operating and tracked all expenses. The division was a complete mess and was acquiring hospitals left and right that either needed new IT or needed to get their system on ours. It was pretty straightforward and easy after you got to know all the cost centers and coding. I worked directly with a Senior Manager who didn't know excel that well so anything I did was GOAT.

You enjoy it vs public accounting? What were the hours like?
Posted on 8/24/15 at 4:46 pm to Jabstep
Hours were 8-5 or 7-4 for the most part. More hours around budget time for about 3-4 weeks per year and then as needed in case something came up. (Nothing ever came up). This was for a publicly traded company. I worked for another publicly traded company in corporate accounting and the hours were similar to cpa firm busy season hours basically year round. That one was awful. I liked it as a financial analyst but just hated the grind of busy season. If I had an equity position in a firm I am sure I could get through busy seasons better.

Appreciate the information. It would be nice to get away from busy season and some of the audit clients I currently deal with. It would also be nice to get away from the strictly debit and credit side of accounting for a while too.
It's hard making decisions on such limited info. The whole appeal to getting out of public is no more tax seasons.

This is exactly what I'm thinking. Things are moving fast and it creates opportunity.
What's your role?

I'm in the internal audit department. It is just amazing though how much they need Cpa throughout our entire company

The pay is good and the hours are reasonable?

Pay is very respectable and the hours are very ligjt compres to what you are used to. The biggest selling point is the amounts of internal movement available. There is always somethimg opening up where you have the potential to move into. And I am talking about non accounting related positions that could lead to big pay down the road

You motherfrickers are an IT DBA analyst's least favorite internal customer.

Best advice in this thread.

For al I know, this was her position. What did she dislike about it?

Send your resume and hope for an interview. Interview them about the position as much as they interview you. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Accounting in the healthcare field is booming right now, and for the foreseeable future, thanks to the ACA.

It wasnt that she disliked anything in particular. I know she liked the company alot and the people she worked with. She was recruited for a position that just seemed like one of those "cant pass up" opportunities. I know one thing, there are def alot of opportunities to move up if it happens to be the same company she was with.

I appreciate the information man! I heard from the recruiter today and will have a phone interview shortly. We will see how it goes. Is there anything else I should know before going into it?

It really depends on the company, there are a couple companies I'd definitely avoid in the New Orleans area who have offices where Causeway Blvd meets the lake.
