A couple months ago someone posted a link to some Sam Altman lectures (LINK) on starting startups. Although it doesn't directly relate to what I'm starting it was very interesting and I was able to take a lot away.

Anyone have any recommendations for other similar YouTube videos, podcasts, or similar? Over the next few months I'll have a very long commute before I open my business and am looking for something more motivating/informative than talk radio.

Tim Ferriss Podcast. Amazing way to get into the minds of some of the most successful people in the world.

I was the poster who linked the Sam Altman lectures. Glad you liked them. If you thought those were helpful, I really recommend Paul Graham's essays. Also, I really don't know of any podcasts that would be incredibly useful. I listen to Y Combinator's podcast, as well as the Recode/Decode podcasts -- these podcasts are interesting because they highlight up & coming companies and their founders -- unfortunately though, there's really not a whole lot of valuable insight you can gain from listening to them IMO.

eta: Actually, something that may be very helpful would be to listen to Elon Musk's talks. Regardless of how you feel about his companies, I highly recommend listening to a few of his talks. His approach to starting & running companies is very unique.

It might lean more towards entertainment than educational, but the StartUp podcast is one of my favorites. I got hooked on season 1 just as heavy as any TV series I've ever been into.

Season 1 is about a guy trying to start a podcasting company and he essentially records the whole, often embarrassing, ordeal of him pitching to investors, finding a partner, naming the company, hiring employees, etc.

StartUp

Season 2 was more uneven and was about some women trying to start an online dating website. Season 3 is only 3 episodes in but it's following a different startup each episode. It's been great so far.

I'd like to find something geared towards professional services or more Main Street USA-focused start-ups. I'd love to hear more about businesses that have limited ability to scale based on the scope, etc.

Would be hugely beneficial to me but the constant talk is about coding, tech-related stuff. For me personally this is interesting but not personally applicable.

You are definitely correct there. Most of the episodes have focused on tech startups or companies deeply tied to tech. Season 1 & 2 focused on one company each season but season 3 is trying something different by highlighting a different startup each episode (sort of). I was hoping this would bring the spotlight to more "mundane" businesses but so far that hasn't happened yet. The most recent third episode of season 3 was interesting but felt more like something NPR's Planet Money would put out.

Regardless, this...

...would be a good listen.

I agree. Just not sure they can give it enough sizzle. It's too bad because the experience of entrepreneurs on this side of the small business spectrum is so much more relatable for 99% of the world IMO.

Bill Simmons just had a podcast with Chris Sacca (billionaire investor) that was fascinating. It's episode 95 on his Bill Simmons podcast.
