I always pay what the price said until one day I saw my friend get $110 knocked off a bbq grill. I was amazed.

Depends on the business etc.

Most small business I pay full price, especially if I notice they have teenagers or obvious people in need who are working.

If anyone has ever been a part of a local/small business, you know that every piece of margin allows people to work and get paid more hours etc etc.

It's good for the economy as a whole and being greedy about buying shite you don't need seems petty.

When it comes to cars and other big purchases though, I go full on smeagle.

Generally no, but my better half takes a fair amount of barter/trade in payment. Some people pay their legal fees in part with ice chests of shrimp, okra, grass cutting/landscaping, etc. All part of small town life.

What kind of place was this at?

If it was a small shop and it was a $1,000 grill, I'd absolutely try to make sure I got the best price.

If it's a $180 grill at Lowe's, I don't think I'd try to squeeze it.

The worst they can say is no.

I've even haggled best buy before on a TV.

Got them from $2,900 down to $2,000.

Had to be a local place.

Lowe's and other places will pretty much laugh at you unless it was on closeout or something like that.

I worked at a pretty high end bike store and people would come in trying to squeeze us on entry level bikes.

A lot of the times I would simply explain the economics of running a business and they'd wind up paying the full price.

The cheaper the bike=the less margin we make. Hence we price as low as we can to move a lot of them and vice versa on the high end shite.

Some people don't have a freaking clue and are just greedy bastards wanting to "win" on a sale. Pisses me off beyond belief.

I'm all for it for most places like that. You get a kid who wants to pad his stat sheet and he'll throw TONS of crap in for free.

HDMI chords etc etc.

I do on big market items or when I hit downtown Denham. I don't on <400 items at Walmarks.

Rarely, but I'm typically fairly thorough in my research before walking in to buy something. Now, buying something used is a different animal entirely. If an individual posts an item used online that isn't dirt cheap already, we are likely having a conversation about it.

If there is a "salesman" then negotiating to me is fair game.

Lowe's, places like that, don't have salespeople.

Places like Best Buy are interesting, because I do consider the guys on the floor to be salespeople, even if they are not directly compensated as such.

This is me. Large purchases, I'm researching and finding a good price before I step in. I may use my research to leverage a better price at a competitor. I may also try to get some taken off or extras if I'm negotiating for a group purchase (suits/tuxes for wedding, uniforms for a team, etc).

Used stuff on CL or FB, I'm negotiating. If a really good deal, it may not be necessary. On the flip side, when I price something really well on these resale places, I'm pissed when someone wants to negotiate over pennies (sale for $50...I'll give you $45).

You didn't get them down. They aren't allowed to negotiate prices. They might bend a little in open box items though. Now they do price match competitiors, so you they mightve dropped the price because of that.

Not a price match, not an open box item either.

I went in to buy the Sharp LC-70SQ15U ($2,300 in store, $2,000 online) and they did not have it in stock. I asked for the upgraded model since it was in stock Sharp LC-70TQ15 ($2,900).

Got them to agree to the price of the lower model for it, $2,300. Then I complained until they matched the online pricing of the lower model, $2,000.

Okay, thats possible. When I worked at Sears electronics in college, we could do substitutions on comparable models if the televisions werent in stock and we couldnt get the tv in a convenient time for the customer.
