It's depressing. Seems like 100k would be the poverty line for families in certain parts of the country.

quote:Yeah I just thought about that. It has to be talking household income.
From what I have seen through my job I am surprised the number is that high
But, also consider that not everybody is only receiving income from one source....Like me
Still too high.
ETA: I didn't read article.

I'm wondering what percent only work 40-45 hrs.
I work 2 jobs - average about 52 hours a week and make over $100k. Not bad.

no kidding. I don't see how some families do it.
Of course, I know two families where their combined income is over 120k. And they struggle. Regularly.
One lady that works for me makes about a 100k, and she sometimes tells me they have no money for groceries until she gets paid. Boggles my mind.

I don't get it. I'm 25 and graduated from school in 2013 and I'm making a bit more than $46k a year and I live what I feel is like a king. I couldn't imagine making north of $100k and having money issues. I feel like you have to just be living WAY above your means.

Do you have a house, wife, or kids?
Posted on 8/12/15 at 5:26 pm to Rust Cohle
I'm in that club and rarely work over 40hrs.

No, but that's because I know I couldn't afford them so why would I put myself in that situation?
ETA: I don't ever plan on having a family either. Just isn't worth it financially to me.

not necessarily
things add up with increased responsiblities:
wife, kid(s), house, car, life insurance policy, toll costs(if you live across town to be closer to a certain school), private school tuition, saving enough to actually retire one day...
you'll be surprised once you get out of the "just graduated & single male" bubble
ETA: i didn't even mention the possibility of studen loans..

My wife and I make high incomes but you wouldn't particularly notice it. We put about $25,000 a year into retirement accounts and that is what the statistics say most people aren't doing, which makes our lifestyle closer to them than it really is. Student loans hurt a bit too I keep pushing that number up a percent or 2 each year as much as I can.
The only real difference is if I want to spend $500 on something I can do it without saving for months and just forgo some other want. That's about it really. I have no idea how people afford kids. I suppose not saving for retirement is how.

Families can be expensive but I feel like I'd spend more as a single guy dating, partying, traveling, etc

Ehhhh I guess this is correct. I don't party near as much as I used to, but I have three bachelor parties this year and two of them are in Vegas so I guess you're right haha.

yeah, I dont get it either. Neither family lives extravagantly. I just think they waste money. I do know one family doesn't look at prices when they grocery shop, which I am sure contributes to it. They also seem to finance a lot of stuff. One guy financed a computer. I was like - YOU MAKE ALMOST 100K a year and YOU FINANCE SOMETHING THAT COSTS $500. WTF?

I am married without kids, and I spend what I suspect is about what those two families spend - maybe a tad more. And I live much larger. Nicer house, nicer cars, nicer vacations, nicer everything. Partying isn't that expensive if you aren't buying random people drinks in bars.
Now dating would probably suck away all my income. I am glad I don't have to do that shite.

My single buddies definitely outspend me, but they do it with camp memberships, boats and associated costs, and night after night at restaurants. Not cool things like day care , diapers, and college savings plans.

I do. And single male with no desire to share it with a female either.
Course, 40 hours of work a week is a lot IMO. I leave at 7:15am, get to the office at 8:15 (17 miles but takes an hour at that time or 1.5hrs leaving at 8am). Leave the office at 5:30 home at 6:30. Hour or so for lunch.
So, even though I "only" work 40 hours a week, a regular day is 7:15-6:30pm and I feel like all I do is work during the week.
