Do you keep all the closing documentation from real estate purchases?

Another spring cleaning question. I hate closing forms because they are on 8 1/2 x 14 paper and take up a lot of space in my filing cabinet. I'm considering trashing all of them. I have the paper work for both my rental and personal properties. Any reason why I need to hang on to this paper work?

Scan them and toss the originals. Back up the scanned documents to a cloud account.

Scan. You never said the age of these documents.

They range from 2 to 15 years. Just not sure why I would even need a scanned copy. I've never referenced them and the loans on some have been sold several times. If I ever need a legal description I can go to the appraisal office.

Most title companies are retaining documents digitally now for an indefinite period of time. You may just call and see if the title companies where you closed do in fact retain them indefinitely. Keep in mind they can go out of business some day in the future and no one will be around to pay for the cost to store them.

I would at least keep a scanned copy in a cloud account. It won't take up much space. You probably won't ever need any of it and the legal description can be obtained very easily by other sources. The cost of storing them is negligible though.
