My pal is a touch paranoid, but is now for the first time a little concerned about getting laid off, and he is not in one of these fields where layoffs are common and almost periodically expected. He also doesn't expect any type of severance.

It got me thinking...Maybe I've been naive, but I've never worried about it.

Do any of you have a thought out lay-off plan?

I've got enough saved to lease a billboard or two to start a personal injury practice. Got a catch phrase and everything. If oil gets into the 30's I'll call Lamar.

A plan like how I'm going to find another job or a saving account so I can keep paying bills while I do?

Employee mentality... I hate it.

Try working as an independent contractor, you can be cut off at any time so your work better be providing some value.

Its called an emergency fund.... x months worth of expenses put aside for unforeseen eventualities. The greater the fear, the bigger 'x' gets. When fund x multiplied by .04 exceeds annual expenses, its called financial independence. then the word FIRE takes on a new meaning "Financially Independent, Retire Early".

I have about 2 months of living expenses, plus my wife's income in case of layoff

other than that, the plan would be to find another job ASAP

Got money saved up.
Get on unemployment.

Emergency savings. Although I have taken my cash amount down to 3 months of income vs. 6 months but if it happens, I could always cash in some stocks.

And I would get a nice severance. I probably could live 4 or 5 months on the severance. Then unemployment. I probably wouldn't have to touch savings or wife's income for 6 or 7 months.

Turn tricks until I can find another job. Or I can finally be a stay at home dad.

Our emergency savings would support our family for three months if I was let go and six months if my wife was let go.

I'm not too proud to use unemployement, hell I've paid more than my share into it.

I work for myself, so my "layoff plan" would be to go find apply for jobs I suppose.

Currently have 6-8 months of expenses/living in savings though.

I'm young with no kids, will go work on a cattle ranch out west, Mont or WY. Happy guide hunts for a season. Do that for a year or so unless the exact job I want come up.

Good idea. Are you young, and do you have any kids?
