Debit card was compromised, any actions?

They ran up a bunch of purchases, called capital one they say nothing can be done until they are no longer pending. So am I basically screwed on this or will I actually be made whole again?

You will have to wait for them to actually post to your account, then you can file a claim on them and get back all your money plus any fees you may have incurred

If you have not already done so, close your debit card.

Have closed the card, so I will get everything back? I was worried because it is Capital One that I would get hung out to dry on it.

don't know about Capital One specifically, but I'm sure you will get all your money back. I'm with a local bank, and after the charges post you can file a dispute and get your money back.

This actually happened on my debit card last Thursday. The only thing they got was a redbox movie for $2. they tried to make a large purchase at Wal-Mart, more than my account had in it so it got declined

jokes on them, friggin douchebags

The only way a bank can legally not return your money is if they can prove you were careless in your card security including having an adequate PIN and securing it. They may ask you to help them try and determine how someone got your card number and PIN.

How much money are we talking about here? If it's just a few hundred dollars the bank will usually not even question it and just refund your money into your account.

They ran them through as a CC I assume. Basically the bank will file the claim through VISA or MC. If they somehow used it as a debit the claim is directly with the bank. As long as you report the issue in a timely manner and file an affidavit you should get your money back.

Its a bit more of a PITA if they did it via debit and you could be out a certain amount in that case. But you are fine if its via CC.

If its less than 300 you dont need to worry about anything since you reported it. 50 is the max for CC normally waived. But with a debit it goes ETFA which can be 500 if you dont report timely and you are screwed if you report > 60 days.

This. You have to report unauthorized transactions as soon as possible. Close the card as if it was stolen then you fill out a form for the bank stating as such. You should have the funds returned to you.

You should never purchase anything with your debit card anyway... Should only use it to take cash out

Thats stupid.

Using it 10x per month and get 3% or more interest on checking and ATM fees back from many banks makes perfect logical sense and should be championed on the MB.

Credit Unions don't require the swipes and have plenty of ATM's everywhere... I don't get 3% Cashback... I go for Delta Skymiles

But to each his own

I trust Amex more than any bank when it comes to fraud protection

Huh?

I was speaking about the 3% reward checking that many CUs do that require 10 debits a month and refund ATM fees. Who doesnt require "swipes"? Use that with a reward card for everything else and you are making the best use of your bank and CCs.

My CU does not... Sorry this is the only CU I've ever dealt with... I assumed that most were like mine... guess I was wrong

Which CU is that? The main reason they offer this is that they make money on these "swipes".

Happened to me a couple years ago. It is called skimming. They get your pin number and make a new card.

Cleaned out my checking account in less than a day. I found out when my debit card was NSF at the grocery store. Looked at my account online and had a ton of withdrawals from ATM in NY city. I am in Houston.

BofA credited my account immediately.

Should I check and see if my SSN was compromised as well? If so, how do I do that?

re: Debit card was compromised, any actions?
I wouldnt think so but I would make sure you follow up with your bank. Your debit card shouldnt be tied to your ss#.

This wont be the first time Capitol One has seen this. They knew what it was when it happened and after the card was cancelled and my account was credited, I never had any other issues.

These people just get your debit card data and get your money out and then they are gone.
