Checking accounts - Online banking/Debit cards etc...

Looking to change my main banks. I've been with Whitney and Capital One for years, and I've never really explored other options.
Things most important:
No monthly fees(minimum direct deposit criteria should be satisfied, but generally don't keep more than $5k-$10k in checking and sometimes as little as $1k)
No FOREX fees for ATM withdrawals
Reimbursed/minimal ATM fees.
The bank doesn't have to be local or even have a physical location. Don't have access to USAA.

Doesn't seem to have good rep here but I would suggest Regions. There are accts that have zero fees. But I would open a checking and savings acct, do an auto draft to your savings and you can earn a 1% Annual bonus to your savings up to $25k just by doing this. This is what I do, and Regions has a huge footprint in the southeast which gives you more access to ATMs in the south.

RF charges fees for using others ATM's and has pretty hefty Forex fees. I would not use them.

Will you use direct deposit?
If so check out investar bank star checking. 1.85% interest on checking if you DD and make 12 transactions a month and they reimburse $12/mth of ATM fees

Looks like I'd need to open a brokerage account with them as well. $9 trades

I have them. I don't even use the brokerage account. It just comes along with it.

I don't know of any other bank that has no ForEx fee on ATM withdrawals except Schwab
Chase has a minimum deposit requirement of $1,500 for no fees or at least $500 DD a month. Comes with upto $300 checking bonus for new members and another $200 for savings account (but need to deposit and keep at least $15,000) for that.

The 12 transactions is for the interest on your balance.
Every account gets up to $12.50 refunded a month for ATM fees.

Yeah I did some googling before I came here, but wasn't loving the information. I've run through that DoC link a few times. I think Schwab is the winner here.

Unfortunately my wife and I share a Chase account so I'm not eligible for the bonus.
I'm just tired of paying the fees when travelling overseas and, for the most part, all online banking is pretty good these days.

You can "technically" close your account after 6 months of earning to the bonus to keep your bonus. Then earn the bonus again in a year.
I say "technically" because although this is doable, it pisses Chase off. And you and I both value that relationship very highly

When Capital One bought ING Direct, I switched my primary checking account to Fidelity Cash Management account.
There is no minimum deposit amount, no monthly fees and they reimburse ATM fees. Not sure about the forex fees as I've never used that, but I'd prefer to use a credit card anyway.
I have all my investments at Fidelity except for 401k. So it made sense to consolidate everything there.

As do I, but I might pull out several thousand over the course of a year at 1% just to have on me even if I use it or not. Cash is still king in many places, so my first stop in every country is the ATM. No point in throwing away money even if it is only 1% when Schwab does it free.
