I'm not trying to steer anyone away from this post, if you can continue reading I would greatly appreciate it. I'm really trying to better myself and my family, i'm currently 25 and engaged to my wonderful fiance with a 5 month old child. Currently i'm running my own company within the construction business, but it's not going so well anymore and I've been striving to find an advancement opportunity to help myself and also my family out. I just finished my real estate class and am scheduled to take my test soon, so that's one way i'm trying to fix things. I've always wanted to do outside sales in either oil or some other field but haven't had success in getting any inside connections to help. I'm sure all of you here get asked for help often, and I understand if you refrain from replying.

What i'm asking for is simply if anyone could help me land my foot somewhere in a good field or help me obtain an interview I would greatly appreciate it. I just need the chance to get in front of someone for an interview and I can impress them. I have amazing references that can back up the type of young, but smart, and professional individual that I am. I have a resume to send anyone if they are interested.

This may not be the best way to help my odds but I realize how strong our Tiger fan base is so I want to try my best.

Thank your for your time!

What degree did you receive from Southwestern Assemblies of God? And what sort of school is it?

I actually didn't finish schooling. I received partial scholarship to play football then left after only two years. Following my second year I couldn't afford the rates so I was forced to come back to Louisiana and work. I do plan on finishing schooling online once I get a better situation. Business Administration is the degree I hope to obtain. I have various professional skills that would help me acquire a position if simply allowed to speak with someone in person and show what I can offer to be of asset. I understand I don't have the many degrees and qualifications that others have but I can show that i'm just as deserving if spoken to. Others would tell you the same, that's why I strive to get potential employers to call my business references. I could sell carpet to a carpet salesman if put on the spot! On paper i'm not the ideal choice but in person i'm much more advanced and professional minded.

Opportunity is what I seek.

My circumstances refraining me from schooling leading up to today is what has held me from obtaining a secure and successful career position.

I actually rather get out of the ownership of construction business . I would rather work under management and be part of a team. So what I'm trying to do is find someone that can possibly get me an interview or put me in the right hands to better myself with a company somewhere. I am willing to relocate.

With no degree, your screwed at any decent paying jobs. Your have to work your way up from low pay. Your best play would be build your business up if possible unless the reputation is tarnished then that would hurt you getting other jobs. With a construction type business you could easily flip homes

I disagree about the no degree comment , not to be disrespectful.

But I have friends and others that I know about that are in hse ,sales, and also operations that make over 90k plus and have no degree and barely passed high school.

A lot is about education yes for sure , but to say I'm screwed shows me you have a one track mind set which is fairly an opinion . I can show you 10 people for each 10 people you show me with a degree that are making nearly just as much if not more simply because they : either had connections into a company that allowed advancement , worked their way up from a entry position, or simply got lucky.

Not to be rude but I disagree, your just an opinion of the system.

Everyone knows someone who has gotten into something by a connection.

Excuse me for attempting to better myself. Am I wrong for doing so? I'm 25 and can admit I don't know it all and still have a lot to learn. You can't say the same for most individuals my age.

I cannot help you as I'm a hospital based physician, but I respect your efforts here; and I wish you good luck. If you keep trying, eventually something will work out.

The first place to start is to get a degree, IMO. Your options are awfully limited without one. The next generation will see even less opportunities with a college degree unless it is specialized in some high demand field.

I have a close childhood friend that did the same thing you are doing. He was a cell phone sales rep in college in the late 90's and made 60k a year working part time selling cell phones. He dropped out of school and worked full time. 15 years later, he had 3 kids and can't qualify for an excellent sales job without the college degree. He has the sales experience and could sell ice to an Eskimo, but his options are extremely limited in getting into the money he wants to ultimately make.

I am upper management in the construction inddustry. I can't help you without a degree unless you wanted to work as a field personnel. That is simply the way the world works these days. Good luck on your journey.

go find a shite job where the company will pay for school.
what about AC repair or electrician trade schools? a BS degree will not pay what you need vs the debt.

DO NOT BORROW MONEY TO GO TO SCHOOL

look at becoming a manufactures independent sales rep for a product in the const industry.

Cracker, that's exactly my point! I for sure don't want to get further into debt by going back to school then working 20 years extra after schooling to pay so much back. It's just a process that seems to have no out.

I've had a few interviews for some inside sales jobs that I'm waiting on calls back. They each loved me but the pay is ridiculous and the opportunity for advancement aren't there so it's basically a no go, yet I'm positive I'll get the job.

My fingers are crossed and I'm staying positive that I'll get a interview somewhere I've put a resume in at that I'm not technically qualified for but yet will get the job.

You can't fail unless you try!

Using debt is ok to go back to school, just be reasonable. Work while in school and use the loans to supplement your income.

The guy said with no degree you are screwed because you will likely have to start at the bottom. You mentioned O&G sales, any non degreed salesmen has probably spent 10 years in the field. If you want to do it right, go get an engineering degree or business degreed from a good school. If not pick an industry you want to work in and apply for entry level jobs. They are usually filled with frick ups so it's easy to advance.

If you read my post with an open mind I said without a degree you would start with reapply pay and at the bottom which I doubt you want with a kid. Again why not build up your business?

Youre going to have to do your time one way or the other.

Either youre going to have to suck it up and go back to school. Make less now to get more in the future.

Youre going to have to take a crap job and work your way up. Make less now to get more in the future.

Or youre going to have to stick with your business and make it work...there is a running theme here.

The only other option you have is get into oil field work and be gone 1/2 the year but be able to jump in at a decent enough salary. Depends on what your willing to sacrifice.

Youre going to be hard to hire in any real sales job outside the construction industry. Youre currently not holding a sales position as it is. Trying to break into sales at 25 with no degree and no experience in O&G.

Your best bet would be trying to do what someone else suggested in getting a sales rep position with some construction related equipment.

My 2cents.

Thanks alot Paedin!

Appreciate the advice alot.
I really honestly just don't have the passion to continue the business. It was a learning opportunity that taught me much, especially about what I don't want to do or become.

So it's nonstop searching for a decent job. The stress of being unemployed is by far the hardest thing on my mind.. I'll continue to ask around and look for something.

Really do appreciate all the advice!

I would recommend you go look at applying at ISC. If you start out as a helper, you won't make that much money (under 20/hr plus ot and benefits), but they will pay to send you to abc school to be a certified electrician. It's honest work and as you get more experience, you will get promoted. Electricians are in demand and will be able to name their own price in the coming years due to the boom in petrochemicals and refining.

I'll check into that right now Kingbob.
Once again thank you so much.

I applied at quite a bit of places around Houma,Lafayette, Thibadoux, Broussard, New Iberia, Morgan City, and Amelia.

So time will tell even though time is essence at the moment. Thanks everyone!
