Got a car that /looks fine. Was pretty content with it. Almost 80k miles.

It is no longer under warranty tho and I got hit with a $2000 repair bill.

Thinking about selling. Buying a new one. Potentially a lease .

What info do you need in order to determine what is the best option?

Is this a $100,000 car or a $1,000 car?

A 2k repair bill is cheaper than buying a 20k or 30k car.

You'll pay more than the repair bill in taxes on a new car.

I have no idea what your car is or if it's worth repairing. But I have sunk a few thousand into a car with twice the miles of yours just so I didn't have a note or have to deal with new car taxes, increase insurance, etc.

You only have 80K on it. I would hope you could get a least another year out it. What went wrong that costs $2K?

This. 80k...is this an oil leak? Just seal the baby and drive it....in this case, drive until it dies or clean it up and sell.

It is air conditioning. Need to get it fixed for resale anyways.

I have been thinking about getting a new car. Angry that it's $2k to fix the AC.
It is a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Shop around. The AC compressor on 99 Lexus GS finally failed after 16 years at around 220k. Went to the Lexus dealer and was told $2100 to fix. Bought the new OEM compressor and dryer online and brought to a shop that specialized in imports. Ended up paying a little under a grand in total, $560 in labor and almost $400 for parts I think. That was a year ago and no problems since. It's been the biggest repair on the car the 9 years I have owned it.

Just Empty Every Pocket.

Seriously, I had a 2000 GC that we put 260k miles on. But you can spend some money repairing those things. I would shop around, because that seems high for that repair.

Bought a new to me 4Runner 4 years ago and haven't had one single issue.

With all the resources available on the internet today I dont know why so many people let the dealer bend them over for repairs. You can repair most things yourself with a basic tool kit and an afternoon.

I just spent 1100 to get the AC fixed on an 01 yukon. As others said, call around to get quotes. If that's the only thing wrong with it, then I would probably keep it if you like the vehicle.

Is it paid for?

In my mind if I pay $2000 and I get six months out of it then it's worth it. Because just about any new car note is $300-400. If you think this repair will get you a couple of trouble free years then it's definitely worth it.

This is true although in this case it probably would be best to let a reputable shop handle it if the system needs to be opened. I do a lot of work on my own cars but it wasn't worth it to go buy the proper tools to do the compressor change. You have to be able to pull a vacuum to flush and evacuate the system, not to mention a good set of pressure gauges aren't cheap. You want to get all contaminants out or the new compressor can fail quickly. They key is just to shop around, dealers charge an arm and a leg for this type of repair.

I agree, some repairs require special tools that you would only use once and can be costly. I went through this when I had to convert my R12 to R134, luckily I was able to borrow what I needed from a family member. And yeah if you need someone to do it for you then definitely shop around outside of large dealers. Usually you can find a mechanic who does side work at home who can do it for half the cost or less.

Driving a 2000 model myself. One with 240K+ miles on it as of this morning's commute to work. It's getting on up there but it will be driven until it suffers a catastrophic engine failure.

Haven't had a note since mid 2009. Loved every minute of it.
