Car purchase out of state

If I purchase a car in Texas, do they collect the sales taxes if I intend to register it in La. I'm looking to buy a used vehicle and there is a larger selection and better prices available in Houston area. Would definitely be worth the drive from Baton Rouge.

You pay sales tax at the DMV when you register the vehicle in Louisiana.

I've had it done two ways. My LA credit union took care of the registration and taxes on one TX deal that was financed. Another TX dealer collected the sales tax from me at the LA rate for my residence and then sent it to the LA OMV with the paperwork.
It happens all the time. Go shopping, and it will work out.

I just purchased a car in MS and the dealer collected the TT&L at the time of purchase. So, I guess it depends on where you buy it.

Just make sure the dealer charges the correct amount of Louisiana state taxes because the refund check for the overpaid amount could be stuck at the main Louisiana DMV office for 180 days for "processing"

Definitely depends on the state and the dealership. Some can only take up to 6% for taxes. Some states like MS can do everything for you. (Bought a fourwheeler in brookhaven and they took care of it all, just needed my address to get appropriate tax rate).
When I was going through this, the dealership wasn't going to take anything out. My bank was going to handle the paperwork and registration.

I think it also depends on if youre paying cash of financing. If youre paying cash you pay it at your DMV, If you finance you pay where you purchase.
