1) I found a vehicle I like at a dealership in Lafayette for $21k. I also found the exact same one at a dealership in Houston, with 9,000 miles less for $18k. How likely is it that the dealer in Lafayette would match the price to the dealership in Houston, considering Houston is a much bigger market? How would I go about negotiating that?

2) given the bigger and cheaper market in Houston, is it likely I would get shafted on my trade in?

3) if I would buy a vehicle in Houston, would they be able to register the vehicle with the Louisiana DMV, or would I have to do that?

TIA

The experts can chime in but matching on used cars is much less likely than on new cars because you price paid by dealers varies wildly.

I'd just go to Houston and buy it

As to #1: what I did when buying my wife's car was show the local salesman a cars.com ad for an identical car in Dallas for $4k less. I said if you can match it, I'll buy it today. He did with no drama (being an empty Lexus dealership on a Saturday morning may have helped).

My question is why would you want to just match it? The other one sounds nearly a year's miles newer.

As to 2: trade in is trade in. You can take pics and answer questions about your car on the phone with the Houston dealer and he can give you a very good idea of what they'll give. I've had them commit to a price before driving.

As to 3: registering it is as easy as anything with the state government is. No extra hoops. Just gotta pay the taxes. If you're financing, your lender will take care of everything.

I think the Laffy dealer needs to do better than match it... to account for 9K less miles. Otherwise, make the drive and get you some mexican food while you are there!

As other posted mentioned, see if you can get a quote on the trade in via e-mail.

They should be able to assist you with the LA registration, but, they won't likely have LA temp tags, so not sure how that would work.

Thanks y'all the input is much appreciated. I spoke with the dealer in Lafayette not long ago and was told "yeah, we may have a little wiggle room on the price of the car. Come talk to us and we'll work it out" so I guess I'm off to Houston.

On another note, has anybody had any experience with Mac Haik Chrysler Dodge Jeep off of I-45? The car I want is over there. How about AutoNation in Spring?

If your dealer paid 19k for the car they have because of condition or whatever and he Houston guy has his for 18k because of its condition or whatever than it really isn't your dealers duty to match the price and take the hit because a far away dealer has a better price. Used cars are never "apples to Apples"

Mac Haik

I only hear good things about Haik. When I was looking at F150s they consistently had the best prices in the country on new trucks.

Bought a car in Houston a while back, no issues with tax/registration. They get people from Louisiana all the time and will guide you through the process (quite easy). Didn't trade in, so not sure about the tax implications about trading in an out of state vehicle over there.

Just go to Houston. They probably are in the car for a lot less.
