So I currently have a Delta AMEX but I recently moved to Houston and will be traveling for business quite a bit in South America where United is almost always the choice so I'm looking into getting a United VISA card to take advantage of this.

However, my Delta AMEX is the card I've had the longest and it's my highest limit. I know you get penalized for closing lines of credit so can I just change this to an AMEX card without an annual fee or is this not possible? I'm gonna try to fly United exclusively so it doesn't really make sense to have the Delta card especially with the $99 annual fee...

Appreciate the help!

if you try to cancel it they'll likely comp you the fee if you make 5 charges regardless of the amount

There was a Delta Card with no AF but I don't think they offer it anymore

They were surprisingly pretty helpful. I changed two cards to different rewards programs with no annual fees. Screw you Delta!

Interesting. Last month I tried to do the same with no luck at downgrading to a no fee card. However, I did so right before the first annual fee was due, so they probably knew it was just a churn for the 50k sign up.

Also, on top of the 50k United Visa you could add Chase Sapphire Preferred later, which would land you 40k more United miles. Plus, if you book through Chase's site you earn 3x, which is more than using the United card itself. Their site tends to be the same price but less selection than that of kayak.
