Stuff happens (transit strikes leading to long/expensive taxi rides, demagnetized debit cards, empty ATMs, and an endless list of other possibilities)....most of us drive by or fairly close to a branch bank. With a phone call to the bank, you can get a few euros with no more trouble than buying a bag of chips. Peace of mind and flexibility immediately upon arrival--that's what I like.

If you're completely jet lagged, it's nice to simply stagger off the plane and have money in your pocket.

i do 2-3 international trips a year, and I have always been able to get cash walking off the plane with no problem.

Now leaving a country with no foreign currency is an art that I have yet to master.

There are places to exchange money in all international airports.

And those airport exchanges offer terrible rates and all charge fees. The ATM is a better option than an airport currency exchange.

Why would he do this when he can just use his debit card at an ATM on arrival?

That plus the credit card should be no issues

This is the best way to do it. Don't bother with euros until you get there.

I quit Regions about 5 or 6 years ago. Up until a few years ago they still charged for phone check deposits. They are building one near my house so I'm hoping the convenience factor doesn't reel me in.

I switched to USAA and then picked up a Chase account through my wife, not to mention the 5 or more credit cards I've had with Chase and my (now former) mortgage.

Finding a non pain in the arse physical bank is hard work though.

I've had a Chase credit card since I opened my first account almost 15 years ago. I still have the credit card and they've increased my balance due to on time payments and that is it.
I would switch to USAA but the convenience of having a Regions close to home is a plus. I don't really do phone check deposits since all of my deposits are electronic minus birthdays/Christmas/etc. I almost switched when they wanted to start charging (hence the Neighbors account) but stayed when they changed their mind.

I use phone deposits all the time. I don't know why, I'm never writing checks to anyone else.

I guess I do a bit of cash transfers by check between USAA and Chase.

The deposit thing was clutch when I got about 30 checks at my wedding. Glad it wasn't all stuffed envelopes of cash like the mob.

I only write checks for my car note now, mainly because my car note is with a bank I do not have an account with and because of that they charge 10 bucks to do an online transfer.

I got a Schwab debit card solely for international travel, which I do about once a year. They refund all ATM fees, even international. I kept my ATM receipts when I went to Peru, expecting issues with the automated refund from the sketchy globalnet machines in some small towns, but within about a week the refund appeared. I never have gotten money ahead of time because I hate the holding risk of potential theft, ripoff, or the fun scenario when you're heading home and deciding whether to sell the currency for 70 cents on the dollar or buy random shite in the airport.

I have never ended up with money at the end of a trip.....that's what airport shops are for. Esp in Europe you can always buy chocolate.
