Breaking a lease in Nola question

i lease an apt inside a complex that has 9 apartments, all connected to one another... There is constant marijuan smell seeping in and my sig other is sick of smelling it. We have a baby coming within the month, 5 months left on the lease. We have made two formal complaints to landlord.
We also have safety concerns due to suspected drug dealers in complex. This is a 2k a month 1 bedroom in a gentrified location.
Long story short, do we have any legit recourse to break lease? Anyone have a good atty that could help?

Has the landlord responded to the complaints?
I would make them in writing, certified mail, especially if they have yet to respond.
There are some laws regarding living conditions in a leased housing. Try taking a look at those.

All 2k a month gets you is a 1br shithole in the marigny? That sucks. That kind of rent isnt sustainable in NOLA with no real economy outside of tourism and some shipping and energy stuff.

For the weed smell go talk to them and tell them to buy ozium. Problem solved. Suspected drug dealers... Don't snitch. If it really bothers you move when you have a child. Or now

I agree 100%. Just when will the bubble burst is the question. Seems like rent is rising every year, exponentially.

Holy crap, I feel way way way better about my mortgage/homeowners/flood costs....drive a little, save a lot.
I'd move, stat.

Most of the gurus recommend spending no more than 28 percent of your gross income on rent/mortgage. $24,000 per year on housing would be 28 percent of a salary of approx $86K.
Two teachers right out of school depending on where they teach could make that.
I don't know anything about the OP, but in my experience, people who pay these rents are the same ages as the people 20-30 years ago who would graduate school, immediately marry and buy a house in the burbs.
At 2.5 times salary, that salary would support a house purchase of $215K. That won't buy you anything decent in Orleans Parish. East Bank Jefferson is rather limited. So, now you are looking at West Bank, St. Bernard, less desirable parts of East Jeff, or LaPlace.
$2,000 for a 1 BR seems like a lot. But if you want to rent, and you can afford $2K a month, and you only need 1 BR, and location is important, why not?
Those dopeheads and drug dealers must be making nice money to afford living in the same complex.
I don't think this type of rent is unsustainable. But I do wonder if it causes more people to rent for longer times in their lives. It's well documented that the biggest obstacle to buying a home is saving up for the down payment, and it's hard to save up when you are paying 2k a month in rent.

You must really like that location. I've been paying $1,400/month uptown for 2 BR 1 Bath Shotgun with yard near Whole Foods for the past 2 years.
I'd read through the lease agreement to see if it says anything about breaking the lease. A lot of places will only require you to pay one month's rent to break lease.

agree. make a complaint. make sure it complies with any notice provision in the lease.

Yes it is expensive, but includes cable, wifi, water.... And it's a very nice place.
I sent a complaint certified mail this am. I am hoping negotiate a way out of it and move on. The dude that owns it is kinda hard to deal with so I will prob just hire an atty.
