I was just recently offered a job there, where I'd be making about 2-3k more than I am here. Currently, I live in Metairie so it's only about 2 and a half hour drive but I've never done anything like this. I'm 26, no debt or major bills but I've only been to Pensacola once and it was about 15 years ago. Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

No state income tax in Florida so it's worth probably 3-5k.

I wouldn't worry about a job for 2-3k in another state, it will cost you more than that to move. I'd consider the long term job implications, your career advancement, which company is better, etc.?

Pensacola is a great town, it has plenty of ghetto but that's easily avoided. As said you are close to Louisiana, but you'll have the Pensacola beaches, AA baseball, pretty solid downtown nightlife, etc. It has some great burbs like Gulf Breeze to raise a family too. Waterfront prices in Gulf Breeze are still very affordable.

plan a weekend trip and scope out pensacola. I'd agree that it'll cost you way more than 2-3k to move, so it'd have to be a great career advancement opportunity.

My rule of thumb is I'm not switching jobs for anything less than 10k a year raise.

We don't know what this guy is making to be fair. If he's making 35k and 2-3k raise along with the income tax savings may be worth it.

Florida also has looser sales tax than LA. If I recall correctly groceries aren't taxed at all so that is something to consider as well.

Just left New Orleans this morning, it would be worth a 10K cut in pay to not have to live there.

Is 2-3k worth moving away from friends and family for? Not in my opinion, unless it's a much better company with better chances for promotion

this is correct. And the no state income tax with Florida is pretty great too

I agree with everyone else - Pensacola is a step up, no state income tax, etc.

You're only 26, so if there is a time to up and move, now is it, before you have a family to worry about. If you don't like it, you can always move back as you don't have anything holding you there.

Also, why don't you ask for a sign-on bonus or a moving stipend? As others have mentioned, it will probably cost that much to up and move. Worst thing they can do is say no, and you might be fortunate enough to have them say yes.

You don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate.

I'd move from New Orleans to Pensacola for the same pay if given the option.

You aren't thinking of commuting??!

You would eat up the pay raise with gas. Plus your time has value too.
