i made a $1,500 deposit on Monday to wells fargo at one of their branches. as soon as it was deposited in our checking i went home and moved it to savings.

the next day i noticed that the $1,500 now showed in savings but whats weird is that now my checking went up by $1,500 as well. its like they kept the $1,500 in checking AND moved $1,500 to savings.

ive given it 3 days to adjust but still nothing. i thought it could be one of my bonus checks from work but that paid today and it was seperate. its driving my wife and I nuts because we cant figure out what happened and i know banks dont make mistakes like this.

what should I do in this situation?

It will get fixed when they balance out the ATM. You could call bank and have them look at it if u want

Check your balance before the deposit and if the balance wasn't over $1500, notify the bank of the error. What ever your current checking balance is, deduct $1500 from it and only spend within that remaining amount. The bank will correct the accounting error on its own but I'd suggest to contact the bank first and do not spend the additional $1500 from the error or else you'll end up having to pay it back, possibly with overdrafts and penalties.

whats weird though is when the $1,500 was added back into checking, nothing shows up under the transactions field.

ill give it until tomorrow and call them because i get paid my normal check and some other stuff goes through so i want to see how it balances out

If you make an error and overdraft, they charge a fee, but if they make an error and over deposit, you get nothing. Kinda bullshite I think.

So you are in favor of regulating banks even more.... Dodd-Frank has worked out so well

Banks charge you when you overdraw because you are essentially taking money that isn't yours and the bank has to cover that.

The bank will compensate you if they do damage to you, like take money out by mistake and cause you to be late or get charged NSF fees.

Over-depositing into someone's account doesn't cost the person anything.

True story. When I built my house 17 years ago it was time to pay the lumber guy. I called the bank officer handling my interim loans. I told her to put 25K in my checking account for lumber payment.

Two days later I get a call from a bank teller:
"Mr. Zach your son is trying to close out his savings account."
Me: "So what. He only has 100 bucks in it."
Teller: "No sir. He has 24,000 in it."

The loan officer had deposited the interim loan into my son's account instead of mine. My check to the lumber guy bounced. My son went to the ATM to get 20 bucks and his receipt listed his balance at over 24K. He knew it was a mistake and wanted to take it all before they found it out.

I explained to him that it's against the law. Doesn't matter if the bank made a mistake.

The loan officer was scared to death that she would get fired. She was too lazy to look up account numbers. She just went by last name. Really stupid.
