$150/week for 50wks = $7,500/yr per kid

That's pretty cheap for a good daycare. I'd bump it up to $200 at least.

quote:

2 employees at $15/hr = $62,000 (not including Social security).

Probably not going to be a $15/hour employee. A local daycare we explored had a full time teacher per classroom plus two part time helpers. So $15/hour for the full time (maybe) and then minimum wage for the helpers who work 4 hour shifts.

quote:

Paying yourself a salary of $40K/yr as a worker/manager. So $102K in total salary/yr

If it's just 15 kids, then the owner can easily and should be one of the main teachers. If the daycare gets up to say 50 or 60 kids, then the owner would need to do more business work, but with that many kids, the revenue should be high enough to take a more managerial role.

And add real time cameras to all the common areas so the parents can watch their kids throughout the day. Would be a cool feature.

I dunno if filming other people's kids is ever a good idea.

Keep in mind that there are rules to how many kids you can have per teacher. At the daycare my daughter goes to, it's 4 kids per teacher. Also, not sure if the calculations added in food or not but that's another expense. Most daycares provide food and not just regular hot dog's and mac/cheese. It's all organic, whole foods type shite.

paying your employees anywhere near $15.00/ hour

Not paying, but when you factor in SS, Medicare, and other taxes it probably comes close to $15/hr in costs.

Those cameras are pretty standard in daycares these days.

Your local department of human resources/family services/children services...whatever it is where you are maintains the standards for child care. There are definitely provider:child ratios they have to meet depending upon age group.

I've always wondered how much these places could be clearing...

Interesting. I wonder if they password protect it or something.

The one we used did, and I imagine they all do. Our's required you to change your password every week or two.

I don't have kids, but I wouldn't like it unless it was highly password protected and stuff.

its really parents insisting on the cameras now.

Which makes hiring a quality staff even more important.

The quality is pretty bad, and there's no sound. We hardly ever signed on to look once the newness of it wore off a few weeks into our first kid being there. I can't recall a single time I signed on with our 2nd kid.

And the cameras were hosted on a website outside of the daycare's, so it wasn't like anyone could stumble on the camera page or anything.

Not to mention government rules and regulations. They even have work plans like mini curriculums. It's nothing like babysitting a child at your home.

For Louisiana:

6 weeks (1:6)
9 months (1:6)
18 months (1:8)
27 months (1:12)
3 years (1:14)

Schools with lower kid:teacher ratios are more sought after.

I think most daycare workers have kids in daycare so they take less of a paycheck for discounted or free daycare.

There is a guy in West Houston area that owns three child care centers (as of a few years ago, haven't talked to him in over three years). Originally he had a partner but he bought the other guy out. My kids went to one of his centers so I got to know him a bit. Each center had a full time director and two of the three had an assistant director. They also employed at each center a cook and a number of teachers and assistants, as well as part time janitors to clean at night. He spent maybe 15 hours a week in the businesses, he had another job (working in financial consulting). He would spend about an hour at each place in the morning, and then the afternoon at his other job.

From talking to him... I kind of got the following picture:

1) It made decent, not great money, per facility, but owning three allowed him to make some decent money.

2) Staffing is a significant concern. Getting and keeping the right people, background checks, etc.

3) Licensing is insane. Surprise inspections several times a year, who have crazy intense procedures to check, so it's basically impossible to come out of one without some sort of violation. One of the biggest sources of violations was in keeping employee files - making sure they all had fingerprints, contact info, updated background checks, first aid certs, etc.

4) Two of his facilities took government money and there are even more requirements for that (my kids went to the one that did not).

Now another option are those franchises like Kids R Kids.

Daycare owners don't make shite. I've seen plenty of them that take home less than their employees.

On a side note, it's cheaper to pay a good nanny if you have a of of kids. We paid a base rate per hour plus a certain amount for certain chores.
