re: Anyone here run a daycare as a business?

Keep in mind that there are rules to how many kids you can have per teacher. At the daycare my daughter goes to, it's 4 kids per teacher. Also, not sure if the calculations added in food or not but that's another expense. Most daycares provide food and not just regular hot dog's and mac/cheese. It's all organic, whole foods type shite.

Those cameras are pretty standard in daycares these days.

I don't have kids, but I wouldn't like it unless it was highly password protected and stuff.

Which makes hiring a quality staff even more important.

Not to mention government rules and regulations. They even have work plans like mini curriculums. It's nothing like babysitting a child at your home.

I think most daycare workers have kids in daycare so they take less of a paycheck for discounted or free daycare.

There is a guy in West Houston area that owns three child care centers (as of a few years ago, haven't talked to him in over three years). Originally he had a partner but he bought the other guy out. My kids went to one of his centers so I got to know him a bit. Each center had a full time director and two of the three had an assistant director. They also employed at each center a cook and a number of teachers and assistants, as well as part time janitors to clean at night. He spent maybe 15 hours a week in the businesses, he had another job (working in financial consulting). He would spend about an hour at each place in the morning, and then the afternoon at his other job.

From talking to him... I kind of got the following picture:

1) It made decent, not great money, per facility, but owning three allowed him to make some decent money.

2) Staffing is a significant concern. Getting and keeping the right people, background checks, etc.

3) Licensing is insane. Surprise inspections several times a year, who have crazy intense procedures to check, so it's basically impossible to come out of one without some sort of violation. One of the biggest sources of violations was in keeping employee files - making sure they all had fingerprints, contact info, updated background checks, first aid certs, etc.

4) Two of his facilities took government money and there are even more requirements for that (my kids went to the one that did not).

Now another option are those franchises like Kids R Kids.

Daycare owners don't make shite. I've seen plenty of them that take home less than their employees.

On a side note, it's cheaper to pay a good nanny if you have a of of kids. We paid a base rate per hour plus a certain amount for certain chores.
