I flipped a few Hatchimals and now have an e-commerce hardon.

From my research, it looks like the buy low, sell high platform is thriving off of private label products from across the pond.

I have an idea or two, just looking for general conversation on the topic.

Alibaba/aliexpress to Amazon, Ebay and local avenues

I'm an ecommerce guy.

Not doing any private label right now but working on some products currently. Amazon is crowded and a lot of people are selling the same stuff (look at meat claws as an example). Check /r/FulfillmentByAmazon/ on Reddit and there are some Facebook groups too for Amazon sellers.

...flipping is addictive, but I don't want to go beyond that. Nothing beats flipping penny items from home depot though

I started at the Hatchimal, found the flipping subreddit, started researching then found FBA..... then private labeling, lastly I spent most of Thursday night messaging chinese chicks on alibaba

I am very interested in the FBA space. I tried getting into it by private labeling a product that I later learned was behind a gated category, so mistake on my part. You live and you learn.

Note they aren't allowing new FBA users until after the Christmas holiday. At that time I'm going to give something a shot.

I'll probably start with an AliExpress item, so not truly Pricate Label.

Im going to do the same with thr Ali route.

I dont think there are any items that Amazon isnt flooded with, but I am also going to try to sell local too. Generic product that I will just put a "name" on to identify

Toughest part is finding the product imo. What product are you looking at selling?

When you say private label what exactly do you mean? I had an acquaintance in my social circle who was making big money a few years ago selling fake printer ink if you can even believe such a thing exists basically just ink that was being dropshipped from China and he was apparently undercutting the big companies and he got some jail time and a big fine. I'm not sure if he ended up positive after it all but he was living the life at one point, a nice home, sports car, etc all off fake printer ink on Amazon and other sites, boggles the mind haha

Nothing phony.

The true definition would be to design something small and have a factory in China manufacture for you.

The method I am looking at to start out is buying a generic product from China, preferably something without mechanics or electronics and putting your own logo on it.

Have had a good deal of success over the years flipping tickets to concerts and sporting events around the country. Very addictive.

Thats interesting, do you have links to the factories who do this or no? What's their minimum unit sizes for orders? I looked into creating my own energy drink a couple years ago being that Im in a business I could market it in and know alot of guys in the same business. I spoke with flavorman in kentucky, they make a lot of popular drinks and you can fly down there and taste test and create your own drink but initial order size was 20,000 cases lol + $10,000 per flavor formulation. I had no idea you had to start so big and I didnt really have time to start a huge business on the side like that and was looking for something smaller.

I think what Dabigfella is saying is generally true. To get China involved you aren't generally talking about 1,000 pieces you are talking about 100,000.

Furthermore, OP have you accounted for taxes? I'm assuming not but taxes play a big role here once you go legitimate. I mean you are talking around 35-40% of your income being income tax.

I have not looked into the DIY items from China yet, only premade generics listed on Alibaba. MOQs range from 1-100, obviously 100 gets the better price, but the beginning legwork would be getting multiple samples to compare.

As far as taxes, I have considered it but I would just be doing this as a side gig so no worries about massive amounts of income. I just want something to do in my downtime during the day and late nights.

I've thought about doing this as I've got a few designs that I could throw on some t-shirts, mugs, prints, etc

people by that shite up and I would do it just for fun

Yea the quantities the suppliers want for stuff like that is astounding.20,000 cases for me meant 480,000 cans lol thats quite a bit of inventory. Although I will say if anyone wanted to create a drink, they seemed to be the best company I found and being in the US was definitely a plus. They talked with me about all the other big drinks they had made, the only one I remember was Jones Soda. Im definitely interested in that field but just dont have the time right now. One day soon hopefully.

Alibaba freight can take months fyi. Usually 6 weeks or more at least. Its harder to ship stuff to here to the Gulf and Atlantic as opposed to California from China, obviously. But from an ecommerce stand point you have to keep that in mind.

Your issue with small orders is price. Doing it yourself you can probably make a little money, but the smaller orders don't have huge profit margins.

For example I've seen guys order those Hobie Kayak wheel eez sand tires. They are like $65 on ebay. You can get 100 of them for like $30 each on Alibaba. But that doesn't include shipping. So Your profit is really only $20 each at most after shipping which doesn't include all kinds of things. Throw in taxes, and its not much. I've seen a couple of others examples, and unless you are ordering 10,000 or more the profit margin just isn't there. Your shipping is a big part of it too.
