I know they'll allow you to spend what they trust you with. But as a new user, do I use the card until it gets declined? How do I know where my ceiling is?

That's better than the embarrassment of getting declined.

Will it take outrageous spending? I'm not spending outside of my means, just using it in place of my debit card

idk, you should just use it and see, if they decline it you can call, but i think it def matters with history on how much leash they give you, i'd take it easy the first few months.

If you login to your account, there is a link where you can punch in prospective spending to see if it will be accepted.

It is a blue button on the main page that says "Will my purchase be accepted?"

When I joined back in 2008, they had this promotion that if you spend $500 within the first three months of receiving the card, they will credit 50,000 points to your account. I actually was in the market for a new computer at the time, so I purchased one, and the transaction went through, i.e. it wasn't declined. However I got a voice mail later that day indicating that I was under a financial review, so I got on the phone with a customer service representative, and he told me that I could either wait until the end of the month and pay my bill to have my account unfrozen, or I could wire them the money to have it unfrozen immediately. It probably wasn't a good idea for me to buy a computer within three days of activating a brand-new credit card with a company which I had no prior history.

We'll see if its worth the fee (next year). I've read good things about the card but I don't know if my spending will result in many rewards. Gold premier rewards card.

Depends on the profile they have set up for you.. They dont have stated limits but have internal tiered limits.. as in they will call you when they think things are beyond your profile. It takes time but we currently spend 100k a month on average using our business card but when the economy went south and many vendors went CC or COD we relied heavily on AMEX. We were called and needed to submit some paperwork to raise our internal limit.

It's almost worth it to have multiple Amex's due to the various threshold spending bonuses.... With spending 100k a month

It's usually based on your income profile and high spending on a charge card (especially being a new user) is known to trigger a financial review where they will ask for your tax info.

Well ours was out of necessity at first.. We went from spending 25k a month to 100k a month in a matter of 6 months. Vendors were falling by the wayside left and right and needed the funds. They still don't even charge fees for the CC because they've gotten so used to having immediate funds

Needles to say, I'm about to refurnish my house and buy some new appliances with all the points..

You can check your spending power on your online account. Mine took a while to get to where I wanted it for each month because I hadn't graduated yet, but now I have over $4k. I usually only use about $1500 a month though.

Everytime I see this I think of the guy who earnestly thought he got a Centurion when it turned out on page 7 to be a Visa Black.

Not like one says Visa somewhere on it...

I'm having a hard time finding the right AMEX card. I want to stay with the company, but I just can't find benefits that suit me lately. I wish more than anything my work allowed me to charge hotels through my personal CC because I would rakeeeeee in points and it would be a no brainer. I'm Gold Medallion on Delta and should make Platinum soon, so I'm not sold on the Delta Platinum doing anything for me.

The AMEX Platinum would be the best given free SkyClub entry, but a $450/year annual fee is steep.
