We are going to start funding an IRA and my financial planner guy is suggesting american funds. What are your thoughts on this fund family?

A+ for mutual funds.

Below average expenses for these funds. However, they perform about market average for funds. They have pretty solid options on the equity side of things. Bond funds are a little meager.

They are a good mutual fund, but they do have loads. That is a break point for some.

They don't have loads in a managed account.

what would some similar options be with no loads? Or tell me where I can look it up myself? I am just trying to get a handle on investing in the market outside of my 401k. We have 3 rental properties and I am looking to use some of the profits from the monthly rent to fund the IRA.

I will let some of Bogle heads answer that. I would think no load indexing is the best way to go until you can build the account up. Just my opinion.

Would that be the high expense R shares or the cheaper, but not cheap, A shares?

Look at the healthcare mutual funds under VG, T Rowe or Fidelity.

Then VDAIX.

Then Fidelity Low-cost.

Then VG Wellington (a balanced fund)

You would be hard pressed to beat American Funds. Even with A shares. Yes it's not pretty initially but in the long run the dreaded "load" won't make any difference. Run a 10 year comparison with an Am Funds A shares against a low cost Vanguard. You'll be surprised. You could also consider C shares if you don't like loads.
AmFunds has gotten a bad rap over the years but theres a reason their early critics are now singing their praises and even writing books on just how wrong they were to criticize AmFunds.

Just go to Morningstar and look at the funds.

I don't do mutual funds very much but there is a smaller fund family I like when I do funds and that is Wasatch.

LINK

You can invest directly with most any fund family.

American funds are often recommended by Edwards Jones reps. They must pay good commissions.

I don't open $5000 IRAs very often and when I do it is a favor.

rjt: Why doesn't The Street (Cramer) list any Am funds? Or Money Magazine 70; Or Kiplinger 25?

Frankly, the only people who have ever recommended an Am Fund mutual fund to me have been employed by Edward Jones.

(I did have through my company some Am Funds -- set up by Ed Jones -- and I thought they were good funds - Growth fund of America; Income Fund of America; Washington Mutual)

But I will not pay a 6% fee to buy in a fund.
