I am a software engineer. It's an under-saturated market where even average talent is really over-valued. The downside, for me anyway, is that the ceiling in engineering is pretty low unless you're an absolute rockstar (which I'm not by any means), and I have zero desire to be in management.

That seems like a valuable career to have. I feel like I am screwed in the career I am in. I make decent money 70K a year but there is zero room for advancement. I work in logistics but I hate it. Also I have a political Science degree which isnt worth much. It is discouraging to be stuck in a rut like this not knowing how your career will pan out.

25 here. I'll be very surprised if not by 27.

I grew up poor and i still don't feel like I've "made it" yet. Maybe living in dc has something to do with that

I had an offer for 100k on the dot a month ago. I'm a 36 year old physical therapist. I turned it down because my health insurance would've gone up by almost 5 figures from the sweet deal I have at my current job, where I make in the high 80s and get double the pdo. I also just really like the place I work. Should hit it by about 38/39 working about a weeks worth of overtime.

It's definitely what you save. My mortgage is 985/ month after buying down here in south Florida in 2011 and i could sell my house tomorrow for 2.5x what we paid for it ( wish I would've bought a bigger one ).

I was 30 when I first hit 6 figures - but that included a 5 year PhD program. My wife was 26 when she hit 6 figures (lawyer).

As mentioned earlier, it is all relative. My wife made a lot of money early, but we lived in Manhattan. The cost of living there isn't as exorbitant as most make it out to be, but it is definitely noticeable.

Typical Dunson gloating on page 8 of a thread.

gloating
I've been reluctant to post in the retirement age/income threads. Regardless, there are a number of posts about folks hitting 100k in their twenties, so I think it is par for the course.

I would have posted earlier, but I've been traveling the last 2 weeks.

Business or pleasure?

I'd like to see a travel board update.

both. London for pleasure, Buenos Aires for business.

travel board update.
meh. I like the travel board, but don't see what value I can add with an update or review... "went to London, saw big ben. Went to Argentina, ate a lot of steak...".
That really isn't going to help anyone and will probably just come off as bragging. Also, I won't post pics for privacy/lazy reasons.

I make 60k wife makes 45k we are both degreed.

We manage money well and have low car payments and no CC debt . Mortgage on a 200k house . No kids .

We are both 29 and after all bills save around $1500 a month .

Could we make more ? Yes , but we are both home everyday by 5 and have our weekends off .

Kinda boggles me that I know some people who make 150-200k a year and have no savings living paycheck to paycheck .

I don't envy those that work late and travel often .

Made 120+ from 34-39, got laid off from that job(oilfield related) now starting a new career at a refinery. New job has the potential for 100k a year with a base salary of 75k so I will see I'm still in training so not getting the overtime everyone else does.

Hit 6 figures at age 31 if including bonus. Got promoted and now at 32 am there.

This place still always amazes me as I feel I kick arse in everything I do and see guys at 25 getting 6 figures

When I was in my 20's and early 30's it was a big deal to make six figure when young....it seems like you guys that are in your 20's and 30's now see it as very attainable, and that is a good thing. I am in my 50's now and doing better than I ever thought back then. Made my first 100k year at 31...i still live on a budget tho, have paid off everything, and have invested well..as soon as these kids get out of college I will be done for good and toasting the beach with my coffee cup every morning...as others have said, it's not what you make, it's what you save.

Damn you public companies . Still kicking myself for my company being taken private, but private firms can also have some interesting compensation schemes (particularly when PE-backed).

By the way, I know you have no free time (who does?), but you should consider joining our economics book club on the Book Board. I'm blown away by the sample of folks we have so far.

Hope you are well! Sounds like you are.

This. Bonuses can turn into BIG bonuses by the time they vest.
