What's your percentage so far this year? I have a good mix of small caps and international funds, and return through yesterday is about -3%.

-1.45

25% target fund
50% large cap eq
25% mid cap eq

Gained some ground the last couple of days. Good thing I have ~30 years left.

No clue. Don't check mine that often. Usually just quarterly to see if I need to reallocate my investments.

I also have 30+ years left. Decided to check mine this morning because some co workers were discussing how bad January was. I'll just keep throwing money in there

January was a good month, I am up 8.6% this year.

Finished 2013 at about 22% for the year.

Probably company stock.

You guys spilling out these returns.. it's arbitrary. Each one of you have different goals in mind, different allocations in your 401(k)s.. On top of that, it's been ONE month into '14. How about reviewing your trailing 3YR, 5YR, 10YR returns?

A long term review is much more reflective of how your personal psychology has driven your investment policy which is, in my opinion, the #1 determinant of your long term wealth.

I haven't checked but I hope the market crashes horribly and stays there for 20 more years so I can pile back in on the cheap.

For example, if you (or your mutual funds for that matter), weren't excessively overweight in technology stocks in the 90s, you were thought to have had poor investment policy. However most of those same "witty" investors who had an average rate of 15-20% returns over '95-'99 showed tremendous losses in '00-'01 that decimated investment portfolios.

However if you were an investor who was well diversified across different industries, you gave yourself far more protection from eroding previous year returns, and probably came out of the tech bubble fine.

My point is... these short term returns for retirement portfolios have no bearing on how good of an investor you are. You aren't managing an institutional portfolio or pension fund. Don't put too much weight on them.

I am not diversified AT ALL, so I am subject to bigger swings than most people. I have been following the advice of a friend of mine and January just happens to be the best month I have had during the 15 months that i have been following his advice.

No, I agreed to keep his advice confidential. With that said, keep in mind I said January was my best month since I started taking his advice 15 months ago. During that same time I am sure most people on here had months with returns that beat mine.

Just checked mine. Currently -2.53. January was a brutal month. Last year was +41%. Long way to go to match last year.
