Question for any LSU band members...
I was reading the opinion section of the paper the other day and someone wrote in saying how pathetic it was for LSU sports to be making so much money, but yet the place the band practices in is a dump. He said that the whole band cant even fit in the practice area. Is this true?

Um, no. The band has a 100yd football field over by Kirby...that's all you need.

With all the Band Alumni, if they needed a practice field, which now because of computers, they don't, but if they did, the alumni could come up with the money...

Members get computer printout of their routine and each knows where to march. Even if they did not practice, the show would still come together....

Now, if LSU Band was as great as ND's Band, then I would donate.....

re: Question for any LSU band members...
I've seen a few other SEC band practice fields. LSU's is far inferior. It is a 100 yard field. That's it. Other bands have some sort of small building for bathrooms and water fountains and a permanent "tower" for the director/drum major. LSU has some sort of "hi-lift." for FBW to stand on. And maybe a Port-a-can.

I would donate....wouldn't be a lot, but sure, I'll toss in a C-note.

re: Question for any LSU band members...
im just saying that in my opinion, we have one of the best bands in college today and they deserve top notch facilities just like the athletes...with all these increases in prices for this and that, you would think they would hook the band up...after all, mike the tiger is living in a $2 million dollar home, which i have no problem with, but support the band too

re: Question for any LSU band members...
I was in the band in the early 80's, and back then, the band room was too damn old. 25 years later, it's definitely needs to be replaced, I'm sure.

Oh, and Mr. Computer Print out guy....you have no frickin' clue. We didn't have computers printing the charts, they were done by hand. You still need to get on the field and practice. 325 people going from point A to point B needs time.

Oh, you were impressed with ND's band making a volcano? Word has it that their opening game next year, they will make a choo-choo train, complete with turning wheels and smoke coming from the smokestack. WOO HOOOOOOOOO

The field behind Kirby is where we used to practice, and there was a tower where Wickes and Russell Laib would direct from. Can't tell you if it's there or not anymore.

But yes, last time I was around the band hall, it definitely needs to be replaced.

re: Question for any LSU band members...
The letter was undoubtedly referring to the band hall, not the practice field. The band hall is old and in disrepair and is too small to house a 300+ member band. Wickes has been requesting funding from the athletic department for years, but his request has thus far taken a back seat to other projects. There is a drive underway by the band/music program to raise funds.

During alumni band practice this year, Wickes spoke for several minutes on the topic and seemed hopeful that full or partial funding from the athletic department is on the way.

The band does need a new band hall and several other things. And yes, the band is now too big to fit in the band hall.

Ohio State has probably the best band accomodations of any school. Of course, the Steinbrenners (yes, the Yankees owner) donated the money for it and it is named after George Steinbrenner's wife. They treat their band better than anyone else in the nation. i have never seen a place that truly reveres their band like OSU.
