Nacho Libre thread (spoilers)
Nacho Libre: a story about a not-so-very-committed priest who wants to be a wrestling star and yet also wants to help a group of orphans that he takes care of at a Mexican Montessori.

This movie starts off with a ND type opening credit sequence and you expect to enjoy the ride there afterwards, but you just end up sitting there waiting to be entertained and before you know it the movies over. The film has a good concept and looks great visually, but falls flatter than a day old open can of Coke.

Here is what works:
1) It looks really good. Everything from costumes, to the scenery, to the villagers and villages themselves.

2) The music. The main theme is kinda catchy towards the end and Black even does two 30 second songs which are funny.

End of the good…………..…that’s right…..thats it

Here is what didn’t work:

1) Jack black running around shirtless…..for about 90% of the movie. Enough! We get it, he’s fat and in tight shorts. BTW, you’ll notice in some parts of a scene Jack/Nacho has bruises and even hair on his chest and the next cut away in the same scene he magically doesn’t. This is really noticeable in the battle royal near the end and is just sloppy directing.

2) Not one single character is worthy of our interest. Why should we care what they do? Why should we care for orphans when they have about 4 minutes on screen time and say no more than 50 words? Why do we care about the main villan when he doesn’t say a single word?

3) Director Jared Hess loves to incorporate food in almost every scene. Why? It was cool in ND, but here its just bizarre. Everything from a guy getting stabbed in the eye with corn on the cob (WHICH WAS REALLY OUT OF PLACE), to someone getting slapped with a cinnamon stick, to the orphanage food.

4) Don’t have your main characters love interest have the personality of a trash can. Ana de la Reguera (looks a lot like Salma Hayek btw) looks good in the face, but c’mon….show us something as to why Nacho and the other priests are attracted to her. There is even a scene where shes in a nighty...except the nighty is something your great grandmother would wear.

5) Peter Stormare (played the Russian astronaut in Armageddon, “Slippery Pete” on Seinfeld) has a cameo as a gypsy and on screen for about 1 minute, should have been on screen more. He’s a great actor.

6) when your character (Nacho) relies on asking people to “high five” them or he makes farting noises several times in order to get a laugh then that means you aren’t doing a very good job as a writer. I counted at least 3 scenes where Black needs to fart in order to get a chuckle from the audience.

7) There is a fat orphan that Nacho seems to relate to. Why? Maybe cause they are both fat? Who knows…its never explained. Hess seems to think that people love fat people on screen and so fat people + food = funny.

I also wish the film would have talked about the wrestling libre history, or at least explain why the wrestlers wear those masks. It was never explained because I guess either A) we shouldnt care that everyone is wearing one or B) there wasn’t a way to explain it and include food at the same time

Overall, its good….if you are a 10 yr old kid, you like wrestling and farting sounds and people getting stabbed in the eye with corn. Other than that…..meeeehhhhhhhh

BTW, Pedro from ND makes a cameo.....and no lie...he looks JUST like the Mexican version of Howard Sterns Bettlejuice.

Funny, I said this yesterday in the "take your pick" thread.

Its ok....nothing spectacular, but I figured it would be over-played and unable to create to buzz that ND created a few years ago.

I never really found myself laughing at all. There was very little substance. It really relied on Jack Blacks appearance to get a lot of the laughs. Maybe upon second viewing I'll enjoy it more. What can you expect from a nickelodeon movie though?

I enjoyed Nacho Libre. It was not like Napoleon Dynamite.... so I really do not want to compare the two.

I think the movie was visually excellent. They did an excellent job with the "look" of the film.

I can see why it got some negative reviews.... many people in the theatre that am sure were expecting Napoleon Dynamite material didn't laugh much at all. It has a couple of repetitive elements I did not like in it, but otherwise, the absurd aspects of the film just made me laugh.

The soundtrack was good as well... I liked the music selection.
