I see an awful lot of criticism being spread around the board and hardly any solid suggestions about how to resolve the problems. Let’s pretend for a minute that you had Les Miles and his staff at your disposal. What could you offer them to help the staff and the team? Limit your responses to 3 points with what you see wrong and your suggestion. Let’s keep this a serious discussion and refrain from sarcasm. I know there are some guys on the board that have actually played the game, let’s hear what you think.

Problems:
1. Gary Crowton is not meeting expectations with the offense play calling scheme.
2. Jefferson’s progression at reading the defense and picking up open receivers has been frustratingly slow.
3. There are no clear leaders on either side of the ball.

Suggestion:
1. Determine what the problem is, then resolve it. Does he feel like he has limit resources? Does he feel over whelmed with the amount of resources that he has at his disposal? Is he lacking confidence in his QB? If the problem can’t be resolved, eliminate the problem.
2. Maybe we need to look at acquiring a QB coach. Crowton may not be the best man for this job.
3. I read some negative comments about Patrick Peterson coming down on Chad Jones. Some thought that it was wrong for an under classman to come down on a senior. My feeling is, some people are natural born leaders. If Chad or any other senior elect not to take the lead then step aside. Peterson plays with passion and I think he is in fact a leader. Chad Jones stepped up his game after Peterson came down on him didn’t he. Somebody needs to step up, whether it’s an under classman or a senior it really does not matter, that’s why they call it a “TEAM”.

What happened to your nuts? that's what i would ask.

How many times in the last few years did miles kick a field goal from the two?

First, you always start with the positives. After the UF game, there is only one: Chavis was a good pick as D-cord.

Problems:
1) Les Miles is getting in the way
2) Jefferson's practice habits/routine needs alteration
3) O-line is worthless

Suggested fixes:
1) Les needs to put the play-card down and stop calling plays from the sideline. Crowton was hired to be the offensive coordinator. Let him do his job. Studawa (however, you spell it) was hired to be O-line coach b/c he had proficiency coaching o-lines in the spread offense. Let him do his job. Right now Les is usurping the playing calling and trying to play "Jim Tressel field position" football. That Big-10 crap doesn't work in the SEC. As a result, our offense has zero identity. Les needs to make up his mind. Either he needs to be a Big-10 offense or he needs to be a spread offense. One of them must be dropped by the wayside. Seeing as he hired two assistant coaches specifically for their proficiency/expertise in the spread offense, it shouldn't be too difficult to choose which one stays.
2) Les Miles is so afraid of Jefferson becoming another Lee that he is turning Jefferson into Lee. The only difference b/w the two right now is that one threw ints and the other takes sacks on 3rd/4th down. Either way you get the same result -> the other team gets the ball. Jefferson's practice schedule needs alteration. Its time to get the stopwatch and every play he runs in practice should be blown dead at 2.5 seconds. He needs to be forced to have an internal clock that works. He must learn to play faster. Practice is where that happens, not games.
3) Every starter on the o-line gets a reality check by sitting on the bench for the rest of the series anytime he gives up a sack or misses his block. Ciron Black shouldn't see the field again this season unless injuries necessitate it. The rest of them should be worried about sitting down as well. That way they'll play with some intensity and passion. Of course, deciding which offensive scheme we're going to run will help most of the o-line problems by simplifying things for them. They won't have to worry about knowing two different schemes b/c they will be able to focus on one scheme.

You know that ain't gonna happen on the Rant, but you did try.

FWIW, I'm not sure Crowton is the answer even if you bring in an assistant to work with the QBs. I just don't think he makes the transition to SEC FB very well. Even Meyer admitted the speed, especially on D overwhelmed him his first year at UF ... he made the adjustments on the offensive side of the ball after that first season.

Crowton hasn't adjusted to 1A FB in the SEC. I think perhaps he gets discretely moved on after this season if he doesn't introduce at least some misdirection plays into the mix + see his O develop the solid beginnings of an identity the rest of the season, starting with Auburn's porous defense in two weeks.

I think Miles steps in during this week and works with Crowton to get some kind of reasonable offensive production - as much as you can get with the inexperience at QB and with the new starters on the offensive line - to get through the season. He may then decide to discretely move Crowton out. CLM knows the buck ultimately stops with him.

Randle, Tolliver and LaFell STAY on the field. Get Shep 10-15 touches a game. Find a fullback that can actually CARRY the ball and get 2 yds. Get some of these true freshman in on defense that can sack a Qb and QUIT freakin worrying about who we can redshirt - if they can play get them on the damn field - works for SABAN!!!!!!!!

To HomesickLadyTiger:
The problems with the offense right now are all a result of Les Miles being "involved" in the offense. He wants to play Big-10 run twice, throw once then punt to get good field position football rather than play "score lots of points" football that Crowton enjoys. Les Miles needs to get out of the way and let Crowton do his job.

Excellent observations and suggestions. Could you implement your plan for, o lets say, $10,000 per day?

Proof? Something other than just his tracking the plays called on his play card? (Something most, if not all, offensive HC's have a tendency to do ... just like defensive HC's for the most part follow the play calling/defensive sets of their DCs moreso than the O side of the ball.)

Other than, of course, Miles following the instincts of his young QB on the play change that led to the final go ahead TD at UGA ... which is something HC's sometimes do based on the flow of the game and gut instincts. The buck stops with the HC if it's a bad call and they know it. It's probably part of that thing about the buck ultimately stopping with the HC or something.

Problems
1. Les Miles
2. O-Line is a joke and our linemen are either not
being developed or we are doing a terrible job
of assessing talent.
3. Need to open the offense up with RS getting into
the game. this business of miles only playing
his seniors will become an issue with recruiting
and saban will eat his lunch on it

Speculation at this point. It's a rare game where a defensive HC doesn't go with a gut feeling in circumventing a given defensive play call/set; ditto with offensive HCs, just like Miles' play call change based on his zoned in QB late in the UGA game for the go ahead TD run by Chuck Scott. But, then, when JJ made the request, he'd already led one come from behind drive to retake the lead and CLM made a decision to go with his young QBs instinct for his own reasons we aren't privy to.

It's what HC's do. If they get it right more than wrong, they have a very long tenure. If they get it wrong on the whole more often than not, they don't. They are painfully aware of these facts at major 1A programs.

They don't enjoy the luxury of speculative presuppositions like we fans do on the Rant. Hey, it's what makes the Rant the Rant, right?

We are spoiled, you know? But this isn't the same conference tOSU or USC play in, it's the SEC.

When JJ earned the starting QB job over JL last Spring into this August, it meant growing pains ... which I think are coupled with Crowton's failure/inability to adjust to SEC FB and I just don't think he does well developing young QBs.

i think you have hit the nail on the head. miles is the problem with the do-or-die run the ball mindset. just look at the running backs we use. with the exception of trindon ,all big and relatively slow. with our line unable to move people off the line of scrimmage our moving van backs are useless.we have a # 1 recruit who is a spread offense qb, ran it for 3 years in high school, and he can't see the field because he just dosen't fit the profile of a power running game qb. literally too much speed i suppose. this refusal on miles part to consider a change is not very smart, especially since jordan jefferson has digressed this season to the point he looks clueless. we're going to look even worse if auburn beats us. they have no defense, but will score even against our defense. i don't think the game plan should be structured for a 3-0 win. sooner or later the heat is going to really come about this pitiful offense. somebody is going to have to take the handoff. wonder who it will be ? in answer to the what could you offer question, let shep run the spread for a series or heaven forbid, even 2 series, and see what will happen. just something else defensive co-ordinators have to deal with and plan on seeing. come on miles. swallow your stupidass pride, and give it a try

I would agree with in some respects but premier programs just reload and I feel we are have slipped since 2007. You realize we are very close to a 3 game losing streak going into auburn next week. There are plenty of issues surrounding this team .
