Besides the hire of Trent Johnson, what do you think he has done to improve the athletic department at LSU?

This whole debacle with the band either being a "pep" band or not even going to the away games, especially when we need the most support, is not very indicative of someone that "brings a wealth of experience and accomplishment". I'm not sure Mr. Alleva realizes how much The Golden Band from Tigerland means to the people of Louisiana.

Alleva oversaw the grand opening of two of the premier baseball and softball facilities in college athletics, Alex Box Stadium and Tiger Park.

It is hard to judge, but if you have been to campus lately, you would see that the North Stadium drive has been completely torn up and is being remodeled as Alleva wants it to be the premiere walk in college athletics. I wonder if the band not going is paying for that?

Joe Alleva solid "A" thus far IMHO.

Time will tell, but right now he's done well.

It's funny that the particular walk he is referring to is for the most part ABOUT THE BAND!

A- so far pretty decent

His errors so far do relate to the band:
1) Piped in music at Tiger Stadium
2) Band trip (football away) reductions

It is a very tough job politically, and ignoring the politics will, unfortunately, do you in as quickly as anything.

He's the ATHLETIC director, not the BAND director.

Exactly. They probably didn't even have a band at the home games at Duke so he thinks it's not necessary. Think of how many away games over the past few years we have won when the band gets going and the fans get louder than the opposing team's whole home crowd. What's gonna get the fans on their feet??? I just think it's ridiculous and he should find a way to make this happen.

budget cuts are the reason the band isnt going to washington

would you rather we leave athletic trainers and equipment personnel in favor of the band?

Are you a former member of the band or something? You sound like you have a special beef with this.

I, for one, could care less if budget cuts mean the full band doesn't take a trip (or go at all). Sure, I'd like the hardworking members of the band to be rewarded, but, if that money needs to go somewhere else to actually sustain the department, it sucks for the band.

Is this some kind of a joke of a post? You really want to judge the AD after one year based on if the band gets to make trips?

Never mind the fact that colleges around the state have had to lay off staff and cut programs.

You waaaay overrate the value of the band.

I enjoy the band. But, everyone is being asked to make do with less. The band should have stepped up and spearheaded a campaign to pay for the trip this year.

I don't think the decision reflects negatively on Alleva one bit. In fact, it more of a reflection of the lack of leadership within the Band department to make this happen given the obvious budget issues the department is facing.

I'm giving him a high grade because ALL of our sports competed in postseason play this year. I don't know if that's ever happened before.

I'm subracting half a letter grade for the idiocy of piped-in music inside Tiger Stadium. Nobody likes it. Stop it.

Overall grade - A-.

To those of you trying to criticize the AD for cutting the band's travel budget, be thankful we're even able to send a pep band to certain games this year. The fault lies with state funding of LSU, NOT with the self-sustaining athletic department, which is doing the responsible thing by focusing on what is necessary to operate.

If you think it's bad now... wait until the state has to make up for a federal adjustment in medicaid funding next year. Most people don't know about that ticking time bomb yet... but trust that it's coming. And guess what will get cut to fund health care for 25% of your neighbors in Louisiana?

That's right... LSU.

We'll be lucky if there's a band at all once they're done with us at the Capitol.

Hopefully he goes through with canceling the Tulane series.
