Maineiri cost us big time in that inning. I won't blame him for the loss, but what a costly decision.

With that said, let's go beat the piss out of UNC. This team is not done yet.

When Rhymes came up I said please God bunt him so the obvious doesn't happen. Rhymes squares for two and I said whew. Then he hits into a DP on 2-0 count. I nearly had a seizure.

This.

You bunt him no matter what, I don't give a shite if Albert Pujols is up to bat. You move that runner over. Down by one run, you get that runner into scoring position, with two chances for a base hit.

Actually if YOU knew anything about our baseball team you'd know Rhymes is our main double play candidate besides maybe Ross. Tell me why you'd be swinging after two pitches that missed the zone by more than a foot in a pressure situation?

I think you need to shut up buddy, and put down the bottle

The real mistake was not starting Katz at first if you're going to let Rhymes swing away 2-0. However, the higher percentage play is to bunt the runner over no matter who is up. That's baseball 101.

Disagree about the Pujols part, but I also think he should have stayed with the bunt. DP is the worst possible outcome in that situation. Hell, a strikeout hurts much less than that.

Exactly, its either take, hit and run, or bunt. But NEVER swing away in that spot

Whether or not you care to admit it, no not everytime. Not in THAT PARTICULAR spot, based on how the game had been going all night. We needed that runner at 2nd with 1 out.

He puts the bunt on the first 2 pitches. Once the count gets to 2-0 you know UCLA doesn't want to go 3-0 and risk walking Katz into scoring position. You figure (and got) a cock shot and one of your best hitters missed it. Plain and simple. And you don't start Katz bc if he gets thrown out then your really dead.

Easy to make a judgement when you know the outcome. Hindsight is 20-20 of course. Didn't have an issue with the call.

well with YOUR logic, being okay with Rhymes swinging based on him definitely making contact, there's no need to worry about Katz gettin thrown out.

I'd rather get doubled off on a hit and run or a popped up bunt. At least the coach tried to make something happen. Hell, even knowing that the pitch was a strike I'd have been fine with a take sign!

Looking at it after the fact, yeah a bunt would have been better. I do understand the reasoning of swinging away there, because you have a big bat up there with a hitter's count and a pitcher who is trying to throw a strike. The bunt was obviously on until it got into a hitters count. Maybe we got greedy and went for more than just playing for the tie, but it backfired.

In the end we cannot change how we played all season to get us here and play small ball, we just need to find the holes out there and do what we do. If any team can make a run its us. We've had games this year similar to this one, but not two in a row. Once the bats get hot, it's on baby!
