Would our 2015 record have been different with Aranda or Chavis as DC?

Based on this from the article posted today:

5.ATHLETIC DIRECTOR JOE ALLEVA: Stay out of football, please. Miles is not the greatest coach, but he has done great at times and done well enough overall to deserve a chance to do his job free of your power-hungry meddling. Basketball is your sport, Joe, and your hires there have not been good on the men’s or women’s side. So, leave football alone. LSU would have been much better on defense last year had you not drove defensive coordinator John Chavis – one of the best LSU has ever had – away before and during the 2014 season against Miles’ wishes. You might as well try to help Miles instead of hurt him or fire him, because if he is fired, you will probably not have a lot to do with the next hire.

I think we could have beaten Ole Miss. Maybe Arkansas

During LSU’s three-game losing streak after that 7-0 start, the Tigers’ defense allowed 434 yards in a 30-16 loss at eventual national champion Alabama, 440 yards to eventual 8-5 Arkansas in a 31-14 loss and 432 yards to eventual 10-3 Ole Miss in a 38-17 loss. That’s an average of 435 yards a game. If that was the number for the entire season, LSU would have finished 95th in the nation in total defense. As it was, it finished 25th and fifth in the Southeastern Conference with 347.2 yards allowed a game. The Tigers also finished 65th nationally and 12th in the SEC against the pass with 224.3 yards allowed a game and 41st nationally and 10th in the SEC in points allowed with 24.3. That was the worst season in those categories for LSU since the 2008 season, after which defensive coordinator Doug Mallory was fired.

It's tough to say whether we would have been better with Chavis or not in terms of our 2015 record. But If Chavis was still here I don't believe that we'd have near the same chance at a Championship as we do now. Without Chavis we don't get Coach O. He and Steele had a very important recruiting cycle, especially since we'll be shifting to a 3-4 this year. Chavis would not have recruited as well and I don't believe Beckwith and White would have stayed.

Yes. Our secondary was atrocious last year. We were 87th in opponents pass completions per game and 57th in opponents passing yards per game. There is no excuse for that secondary talent to give up those numbers. Also we gave up 20 points to every opponent except 3 and 1 of those 3 teams score 19.
We were 106th in opponents 1st half points per game were 59th in 2nd half opponents points per game.

I'd rather be where we're at now with Orgeron and Aranda but Chavis would have made the 2015 team into a national championship team. You all saw what he did to the 2014 defense towards the latter half of that year. The bowl game vs Notre Dame was a fluke but those games vs Ole Miss and Alabama weren't. The weak link to Chavis' staff was Brick Haley who couldn't coach a DL to save his life.

With Chavis maybe 1 extra victory against Ole Miss or Arky. Neither of those games were out of reach.

With Aranda, it's impossible to know, but I think we compete better overall in all the games with 2 extra wins. Bama would have been hard to win because it wasn't the defense that really killed us. It was the fact we could not run.

No, we were still predictable on offense. we need to convert third downs. The defense can only do so much

Our offensive scheme helps our defense. Even when our offense sucks (2015 offense in no way sucked) our TOP keeps our defense off the field.
In 2015 we were 4th in the sec in average TOP.
We were 5th in the sec in 3rd down conversion %. While not great its not so bad it's a huge detriment to the defense.
Our offense was 3rd in the sec in offensive points per game while our defense was 9th in the sec in opponents points per game. Texas a&m was ranked ahead of us in opponents points per game.

Based on the way we were manhandled upfront on both sides of the ball in all three losses, it's hard for me to put them squarely on Steele. Not that I thought he did a good job last year. Our defense was lost it seemed 75% of the time.

No.

Chavis had us last in the SEC in sacks the season prior and not getting any turnovers.. we would have been too thin on the line for him as well.. and I doubt we'd have Orgeron if he stayed.

Chavis was getting stale and his recruiting was getting stale as well.

I don't believe even Nick Saban as DC would have made much difference in last season.. Maybe we win 1 extra game.

The defense would have been better with Chavis. Steele defense was too complicated. The players were lost

Statistically the defense was still very good. They were better at getting pressure on QBs, but the zone gave up a lot of passing yards.

Chavis took a less talented (IMO) defense in 2014 and held ole miss to 7 pts, Alabama to 13 pts in regulation, and 17 to Arkansas while our offense scored 0.

Our offense in 15 was better in all 3 games, of course with Chavis we are a serious title contender last year...
But like another poster said, idk if we are set up as well this year personnel wise

Steele couldn't keep a Syracuse walk-on from putting up mid 20s, Jeremy Johnson from putting up mid 20s, USCe's backup from putting up mid 20s, treon Harris 28 pts... All the cupcakes were in the 20s as well.
Terrible Defense, Should have seen November coming

What? 57th in opponents passing yards per game.
89th in opponents completions per game.

We were 9th in the sec in opponents points per game. Texas a&m ranked ahead of us in opponents points per game.

Our offense ranked higher in the sec than our defense.

Exaclty. Although we still lose to bama.
Arkansas and ole miss walked up and down the field on us in 2015.
When is the last time a lsu defense was 9th in the sec in opponents points per game? Chavis had A&M ranked ahead of us.

terrible defense

Yeah but you still have posters acting like the offense was our problem in 2015.

I wish people would stop trying to point to 1 individual problem. We had a number of problems that held us back last year and in '14.
