He has 409 wins but only 2 national championships. Would he have lasted that long here?

difficult to believe that anyone lasted anywhere doing anything for that length of time, my guess would be no

He would have been eased out after the 79 season for not beating Bear Bryant.

What do YOU think?

I don't think we will ever see another coach stay at one program that long ever again

Not with our "fans".

Hell no! Whoever was the "Jack Del Rio" in the 70's, we woulda been wanting him lol

No because with LSU's history with coaches, he would have bolted to some other opportunity after winning his 2nd or 3rd national championship.

Several things could have happened.
1. He could have been run off at the end of one of the four-year periods of mediocrity virtually every long-term coach experiences at a program
2. He could have retired much earlier because of the pressure that an SEC job entails
3. We could have kept him that long because we never 'got over the hump' the way that DiNardo and Saban got us over
I don't really see him bolting - he stayed at Penn State despite virtually all of the top-tier schools showing interest in him.

No, because LSU doesn't do deity's. Nor should we.

I'm wondering if the Penn State scandal had never taken place; would they have propped him up next to the goal post when he died?

I got a better question..."Would LSU have lasted 46 years with JoePa"?
JMO...we would be just another team, up and down seasons, basically mediocre. Another question...Not sure exactly what year he was hired but I believe about the same time coach Mac was hired at LSU. Where would LSU be had coach Mac been around for 46 years?
Posted on 1/24/12 at 8:52 am to Tigerfanindawgland
shite no. State College, Pennsylvania is a tiny town that literally worshipped him. Not the case here.

One national championship every 23 years?! Nah he wouldn't stand a chance. At least not if his tenure was to start now

HELL no. Look at McClendon's last few years. Keep in mind Paterno didn't win his first title until three years after Cholly Mac's forced retirement.
Plus LSU didn't play Army,Temple and Maryland ever year, either.
