That seems to confirm what most of us always believed: that Archer was a good coach but couldn't recruit to save his life and that Hallman wasn't much better (and worse as a coach). I blame Brett Favre.
Here's another "what if". What if DiNardo had hired a competent coach instead of Lou Tepper?

Don't let it get to you to bad. Spurrier was passed over for Archer not Hallman. Archer was hired at the recommendation of Arnsparger who just went down to Gainsville to talk, but while talking he decided to be the A.D. at Florida.

Shortly after Hallman was hired, we had him at a function to welcome him to LSU. I by chance happened to be standing with him as we went through the buffet. As I was sitting down after listening to him, I said to myself, it is obvious that I don't know anything about football because the smart people that hired this man must know something that I don't. I thought he was amoung the stupidest people I had ever met based on that 5 minute conversation.
After I observed his coaching, I realized that I did know more about football than he did.
Also, he said one of the most brilliant things at that get-together.
He said that the LSU program was in such bad shape that it was going to take years before it got better and things were going to be worst in the next couple of years.
That statement allowed the adminsitration to think that he was improving the program the first few years.
But now we know the idiot was a disaster.
After I observed his coaching, I realized that I did know more about football than he did.

Asw I said in post some time ago, Spurrier was not only not given the coaching position instead of Archer, he was highly insulted and taken to the Capital instead of the LSU campus when he arrived in Baton Rouge, While there and being call a boy that doesn't understand Louisiana politics, Archer was named coach at the suggestion of Arnsparger.

Could be argued Mike Archer. The LSU was better when Curley left than when he arrived. Can't say that about Archer.

I would argue that this is simply attributable to the talent pool in the State of Louisiana (and the fact that a good number of it will end up at the single major college football program in the state, regardless of how crappy its doing at the moment) versus the talent pool in the State of Colorado, much more than anything having to do with anything Curley may have done positive as a coach here (which is essentially, nothing).
Someone with more information, feel free to correct me, but I understand, Hallman did a lot of damage to LSU's recruiting in North Louisiana, he apparently alienated a number of high school coaches and potential recruits. I don't recall the details, but there was a problem.
