With 85 scholarships, why don't coaches recruit more "specialists"?

Back when I was at LSU during the Shaq years, I often wondered why coaches didn't ask a guy like Shaq to come play football to do things like try to block FGs or even to just stand in the end zone as a redzone or two-point conversion target. If you think that a 6'4" WR is a mismatch on a 5'11" CB, how about a wide-bodied 7'1" guy on a 6'3" LB or 6' safety in the end zone.

Granted Shaq is a freak athlete. He is just an example. But there are many other freak athletes that out there that aren't Shaq.

As many projects or reaches there are in recruiting, I don't know why coaches don't think out of the box more. Can you think of any other opportunities for such "specialists"?

I wish LSU would recruit a passing specialist.

I would take Chris Jackson right now to lead this team at QB.

Most teams recruit QB's that can throw, we don't

Because 85 scholarships isn't a lot.

He said he was better at football, but saw the NBA contracts compared to NFL and said eff that. Put all his effort into basketball knowing he could make way more money.

It's not like there are a million elite specialists coming out of high school. Remember these kids would have to be specifically coached up and have extensive playing time against good competition. High school athletes get a lot of time cross training and filling in positions they may not be perfect for.

1. it is 85 scholarhsips agross 4-5 classes. You have to not just think, ok i have a center lets recruit s novelty. You have to think ok i have a center and in a couple years i won't, so lets recruit another center.

2. depth

3. there are other sports. after a certain hight athlete guys play basketball.

now why every mediocre power forward doesn't try football out after watching Antionio Gates and Jimmy Graham is beyond me,

The basketball team has a football player on the roster now. Bridgewater will never play basketball at the next level. But he wouldn't be a specialist.

With the potential to play fourteen games, the need for depth is greater than ever.

It's pretty clear from the OP that the guy is asking to be informed. Why don't you try offering insight rather than insults?
