That is Les Miles brand of football...we have to dominate in the trenches to win.

One of the ways you can mask and inadequate or overmatched line is have a QB and a coach that that is creative in play calling. For example, Memphis over Ole Miss this year.

The NFL is another good example. In the NFL the lines on both sides are generally equal. There is a lot of parity in the NFL. So how do you overcome parity in the trenches? In general good play calling and execution at the QB position.

Well, LSU can not rely on good play calling and QB execution. Sorry, we just don't have a history of good play calling and QB execution to mask inadequate line play.

So back to the original question; will we be better in the trenches next year?

Improvement in the trenches is the only way I see a Les Miles coached team winning more than 9 games next year.

I see Ole Miss losing a lot of DL depth so we should be able to squeak out a win against Ole Miss. Alabama? No way. Arkansas? Maybe.

I'm afraid Florida and Auburn will be better in the trenches next year so those are possible losses too.

as worrisome as the O-line was in November. The d-line scared me more. Bama and Arkansas o-line ate them alive. The DT couldn't force a double team to save their life

we are so proud of our players in the pros . cannot build a team if they keep leaving , look at Ole Miss 22 starters leaving this year what will they have next season ??

I know. I saw it too.

I hate to rely on freshman but some of the 4 and 5 star DTs we are now recruiting will have to play.

That just shows you the poor state that the DL is in right now (even with the improvements by Coach O.) when you have to rely on incoming freshman to shore up your DL.

Problem with Les Miles coaching is you cant just be a little more talented and seasoned to beat the well coached teams. We have to be a lot more talented and seasoned to beat a well coached team.

We have to have a lot in our favor personnel wise to offset losing the coaching battle in every contest.

That's sad but true.

If everyone on the OL comes back and we add this recruiting class, we should get nearly every starter and add solid depth.

So if that happens, yes we should be much better in the trenches. I have to think Maea Teuhema with another year is going to be an absolute mauler as well.

What really helps the trenches on D though, besides depth, is a solid LB play. We desperately need Beckwith to return.

Caterpillar has good words for the defense and I'll add this on the offense

As much as we can expect the O line to improve we need Brandon Harris to improve and receive coaching and development at the same rate so they can meet each other halfway. What's important is we return the line, Harris and fournette as juniors. They will all improve by default and I have high hopes for the offense based on that alone for next year. Having Bama at home for 2016 this will be the last chance for this group. I'm equally confident in that the next OC will be someone who is able to appropriately guide this improvement.

You hit the nail on the head with these statements. LSU offensive play calling mimics an NFL OC's play calling in a lot of ways. When you have a SR QB like Mett the offense looks great in this scheme but when you have a SO QB like Harris the offense doesn't look as good. The OC has to adjust and be creative to help his young QB. He cant rely on his SO QB to convert every 3rd & 6 like his SR QB did 2 years ago. This is why our RUN/PASS ration has been a heavy lean toward RUN the past 2 seasons.

Harris has potential --> see Florida.

The o-line was young and inexperienced. It will be better but they need to dedicate themselves to getting stronger and wiser. We lose Vadal but Hawkins needs to return.

The d-line showed life against A&M --> Herron had a breakout game. They too must get stronger and wiser. New blood is needed but we will see improvement.
Retain Kendell Beckwith.
We need better safety play but Toliver and Dontay are studs.
