Will future generations buy season tickets?

An interesting article from Mr. SEC came out, apparently jumpstarted by the decline of season ticket sales at Tennessee this year. Things such as the economy, nearly every game being on TV, outrageous prices, and age are being thrown around as reasons.
It asks an interesting question - will younger generations spend that kind of money on season tickets once their time comes? Of course some will, but with single game tickets available on various sites, and HDTV parties being a big deal...what do you think?
Here's the article:
Last season, as some SEC schools saw actual attendance drop at their games, internet and talk radio laid part of the blame on HDTV and the league’s new ESPN television contract. With every game on television — the theory went — folks can stay home and watch on the tube.
But it’s entirely possible that television viewing is only a symptom of a bigger problem: As one generation of fans ages and stops buying season tickets, the next generation might not be as interested in taking their place.
Just another offseason discussion to break up the monotony of summer.

I could certainly see this happening. I hope that I'll be able to get them, but if a person has an average income, paying for the tickets and a TAF donation for a family of four to attend games like UL-L and McNeese would be a challenge I imagine.

Huh? Is this in Bizzarro world? Ebay and Stubhub are where scalpers go to sell premium tickets for extra premium prices.
As far as the whole argument that Tennessee's season ticket sales being a sign of things to come throughout the league...It's hogwash as my grandfather would say.
I'll give you two guesses as to why Tenn's season ticket sales were down. You should only need one.
HD TV will NEVER replace going to the game with friends and family, buying a program, good-natured tigerbaiting of opposing fans, the sound of Death Valley all around you, eating a Tiger Dog and washing it down with a bourbon and coke that you snuck into the game.

Only if it's a big game. I've been able to get Hornets tickets faced at $200-300 for like $80 on there.

Most of that can be done for free, without having to buy tickets to actually get into the game.

I can understand what they may have ment. If you take away maybe the LSU games vs Florida or Alabama, you can pick up tickets to take your family to a game with tickets from online places probably cheaper than if you factor in TAF donations, etc required of a season ticket holder. Remember also, LSU season tickets are not near as expensive as some of of the other SEC schools.

I definitely see more drops in season ticket sales in the future as fans vote with their wallet to watch on TV.

Price will always reflect demand, that I promise you. People may buy less season tickets, but tix for big games will always have big game prices.

The KIffin hangover and who could get that excited about watching Dooley learn how to be a coach.

Tennessee's season ticket sales were down last season as well. They had several available to the public with no donation during July & August last year.

I agree. You can also see the game from a much better perspective on tv, especially the replays. One thing I saw that would make the game experience much cooler for the younger generation is the hand held displays at the game. Fans can see the stats of the game, rosters, drive charts and even control their own instant replays. I know some of that is already available on cell phones, but when have you been able to get a reliable signal in TS?

Understood, but who would forgo the game in person to go watch it at home after doing all of these things?
I know a few people that do but that is because they have no tickets.
There is ALWAYS a point at which a luxury item becomes too expensive, but I don't see where we can draw the conclusion that this particular upcoming generation will all of a sudden stop the tradition of going to the games.
SEC fans will stop donating to the school before they stop paying for season tickets. (It's sad but true)

No way. In person, you can see the play developing over the whole field without camera limitations. That's one of the things that I much prefer to instant replay and commentary on tv.
It's also something that makes Jefferson look worse as a qb. You can see more open receivers after the snap in person moreso than you see on tv.

Can you do that? For most SEC schools I thought you HAD to "donate" to the athletic fund just to be put on the list to then purchase the season tickets. I could be wrong though.

I can't speak for every school, but at LSU you don't have to donate a single dime to the academics of the school. You just donate to TAF. Now there are some projects that a donor can specify that he wants his money to go to. I think there are scholarship funds for athletes. That's about as close as you get to actually donating to LSU academics.
Also, at LSU, the athletic department and the actual university are 2 separate entities. The athletic department does give some of it's profit to the university, but it's not much in the grand scheme of things.

Stub-hub has ruined buying tickets at a reasonable price. I tried to get tickets to some cubs games last year, and anything decent was over $150 a ticket. You used to be able to buy tickets for close to face value but now everyone wants to make a killing!

Yep, I'm waiting for the app which will let me click on JJ and then click the open receiver and click "pass."

This.
The stadium has replays, anyway.
A $5 program can tell me who all the players are, and I don't have to listen to the announcers tell me the same lame arse stories week after week.
By the way, have you guys heard that Herman Johnson was the biggest baby ever born in Louisiana?
Besides all that, with the exception of Alabama, Florida, and the occasional Auburn game, if you pay more than $20 to get a seat in Tiger Stadium, you're doing it wrong.
