Why Run the Ball?

I'll be the first to admit that LSU's penchant for only running the ball or "primarily" running the ball can be very frustrating to watch. Especially in a loss. However, the past few weeks have made a believer out of me. Passing has the perception of being way more entertaining, and looks like "innovative" or "smarter" football. Running looks like "simple" or "basic". We probably all fall into that trap.
However, if you can run it, you run it. I know it's been overused but Bear Bryant was famous for saying "there's only 3 things that can happen when you pass, and 2 of them are bad". Running is the higher percentage shot. Why pull up for 3 when a dunk is there? If you can block like LSU is blocking now and have the back LSU has, running is the "smarter" play/plan. Add in the blocking schemes that LSU runs and it is "innovative". Running for 250 on someone is more demoralizing than passing for 400. You rarely lose when you rush for ton, but can often lose if you only pass for 350-400.
There are probably a lot of these smart coaches/teams that pass all the time that are envious of LSU's "basic" run game right now. Ole Miss to name one.
Run baby Run.

What have you seen anything from Jennings that makes you think he is ready to sling it all over the field? He's not ready and the run game has vastly improved.

Feel free to actually read the thread.

Maybe so, but the point is…how many championships have Texas Tech, Washington State, California, Baylor, West Virginia, et. al won by chucking the ball all over the field??
Reminds me of the old golf adage: You drive for show, but you putt for dough. I think college football can be broken down to passing for show but running for dough.

I did read it, my post supports the OP's point with an emphasis on why LSU runs so much. Feel free to lick by ball sack.

Jeff gets it. Maybe a few of them will actually read your damn strong post and question their own lack of knowledge. Miles doesnt even try to look "smarter or more exciting, he wants to be efficient and effective. If some take that as smart or dumb football, so be it.
Run Baby Run
My coach said the same thing about passing maybe thats why he won alot of football games. idk
Chip Kelly " U guys keep trying to categorize me as a scheme guy. Let me assure u, if we could just line up and push it down your throat thats what we would be doing here at Oregon. I coach to my personnel.

Not reading. All I know is it's a game of 60 minutes...why not keep the ball as long as possible? This is why these up-tempo teams fail when thy hit the right defense and ball control offense.

Passing is sexy. Running usually isn't...especially in the brutal, smash mouth way LSU is doing it.
Of course, I'm fine with winning with great defense and a brutal, punishing running game. I have no qualms at all about winning a truly defensive game 9-6 if need be. I loved the final drive LSU put together against Ole Miss...just fantastic to watch.
All that being said, there occasionally comes a time when if you are essentially one dimensional and either you are not executing well or the other team has shut down your one dimension, a second is needed. There have been times over the years where this lack of a second dimension has cost LSU badly. That is a real issue. So long as you're one dimensional BY CHOICE you're good to go. If it's by need and that one gets shut down, you're screwed.
But I agree...if you can run and do it well, you run. It eats clock, punishes the defense, imposes your will, etc.

it really doesn't matter how you move the ball up and down the field (run or pass). what matters in college football is how good is your defense. since #52 took over the starting position, our D is starting to look like the old LSU Defenses. i think we can rattle Sims.
i think you'll see a few offensive wrinkles that you'll wonder why we haven't run them before this game.

That wasn't Bear Bryant, that was Woody Hayes.
You're dismissed.
