Why do people think it was JJ's call to decline the bid?

There's no coach in the NCAA that would decline a postseason bid. Had to have been a player vote. As much blame as JJ deserves for this season, he's not the fall guy for this one.

Then he needs to tell the truth and not try to fall on the sword for his team's lack of character. Because at this point, make no mistake about it, his reputation as a coach has been skewered, both locally and nationally, possibly to the point of no return.

hmmm I wonder why?

This is the one time I wish Mainieri was the coach of the basketball team so he would just let it out.

I was personally hoping we declined the NIT because we were planning on firing him immediately. I keep getting on here each morning hoping to see news of his firing.
He might be a great guy and a good recruiter, but there is no excuse for this team to have performed as poorly as they did. I wasn't expecting a championship, but not making the NCAA tournament was terrible.

I think his recruiting abilities just took a massive hit.

Because it was stated in the release by the university that it was his decision.

His recruiting ability ended up screwing him because it's so much better than his coaching ability. Recruited great players thus raising expectations then can't coach them.

Because Joseph Alleva said it was Johnny's call.

I'm not sure how much clearer this issue could fricking be.

He's paid to coach games. If he's not willing to do that then he needs to leave

Hopefully Alleva made him so we have time to find a new coach

Having the team flat out quit was worse than not making the tournament.

I was just about to start a thread regarding this matter.
If you're CJJ, you definitely want to play in any sort of tournament to get the players who are returning (yes, we do have players returning) next season some playing time.
As much as I dislike CJJ, I can tell you he is disappointed his Tigers aren't playing in any more games this year, whether it's the NIT, CBA, or the Pancho's Raise the Flag Worst Four Tournament.

Who the hell upvotes OP's ridiculously stupid theory?

Yeah, because Alleva is going to put out a release stating the team voted not to play. Of course they will say it was the coaches decision. Either way the whole thing is total shite show.

So if doing that is too embarrassing to cop to, and they know that to the point that they would lie about what happened to cover it up, why would you assume that's what happened?

Because Joseph Alleva said it was Johnny's call.
And Alleva is Johnny's boss, and thus has the final say.
But it's all horseshite anyway; there was no bid to begin with. This is the athletic department trying to save a little face.

By that logic, Alleva made the call on all the playing time decisions this year, all the timeouts (or non-timeouts), all the defensive calls, the mix of pressing, the rotations, the practices, the strategy on when to sit players with foul trouble, etc.

It wasn't his call. Ben was already talking to an agent so He had no intent on plying collegiate ball after TAMU game.
