Why aren't TE's used more?

One thing that has bothered me in recent years with LSU football is that the tight ends are barely used in the passing game. They are strictly used as blockers and that's it. You would think LSU would use the tight ends more frequently to move the ball down the field, but they almost never even try to throw the ball to a tight end.

The last play-making tight end LSU had was Richard Dickson, and that was years ago. DeAngelo Peterson was okay, but I don't recall him really being a consistent factor in the offense.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Les Miles the TE's coach for the Cowboys years ago? If so, you would think he would be more inclined to include the TE's in the game plan? Apparently not.

Why isn't Desean Smith used more in obvious passing situations?

Desean Smith is completely underutilized. Damn shame he is about to be a senior and has about 15 career receptions. Won't be surprised if he's a good pro.

This is a fantastic question and one that really has no good answer.

We run a ton of heavy sets with 2 TE's and/or a FB. But we don't really utilize them as receiving threats, which makes is extremely predictable- it's either a run or a pass to the lone wideout.

Look at how Arkansas and Wisconsin use their TEs and HBacks to catch passes. No reason we can't do that and keep defenses honest.

Correct. Miles was Cowboys TE position coach. This means TE is his area of expertise/focus. Hence it typically being our shittiest position group - that hasn't put a player in the league in over a decade.

Because, for most teams, there are typically 3-5 better options on the field at any given time.

Texas a&m is a pass happy offense

Guess how many catches their tight ends had all season?

3..

one of their tight ends had 1 catch and another had 2..

kyle allen had as many catches as one..

smith and davis are their only 2 tight ends with receptions all season..

think about that..

it's not just us.. it's just the tight ends don't catch much in the ncaa..

graham didn't have many catches at Miami either..

I agree, our style and offense are set up to have more catching from the tight ends than the spread teams.

I've wondered this for some time now. Way to much talent not to use them more often.

Why don't you think about the fact that they run an air raid? They have 4-5 WRs on the field 90% of the time. I mean 4 wide is base and they use a lot of 5 wide. A TE is going to have way less catches because he's barely in the game.

No this is wrong. LSU runs a pro style offense yet is one of the few that never get production from the TEs. We run a ton of two TE sets, 1 WR sets, yet we still can't utilize the TE more than just being a blocker?

Check out McElwain, Saban, Mason, Bret, and *So Carolina. These are the other pro style offenses in the SEC, well UGA too, but they aren't good in TE play which they usually are yearly. Just in 2013, they had a TE in Lynch who had more yards and TDs in that 2013 season than LSU TEs had in the 2014 and 2015 season COMBINED!

Arky
Hunter Henry 3 years - 111 rec 1569 yards 9 TDs
Jeremy Sprinkle 1 year - 23 rec 308 yards 5 TDs

Bama
OJ Howard 3 years - 61 rec 864 yards 2 TDs

Florida
Jake Magee 1 year - 41 rec 381 yards 4 TDs
DeAndre Goolsby 1 year - 17 rec 277 yards 1 TD

South Carolina
Jerrell Adams 2.7 years - 62 rec 887 yards 6 TDs

Vandy the TE from last year (I think he was injured before this season)
Steven Scheu 2.5 years - 75 rec 888 yards 6 TDs

LSU
Colin Jeter 1 year - 12 rec 158 yards 1 TD

I didn't even add the QBs in the spread offenses just in the SEC

Don't be silly. Graham played basketball all throughout college until when he finally played football as a senior. Still, in that one year he had 17 rec for 215 yards and 5 TDs.

LSU hasn't seen even production like that since 2008 with Dickson.

Just face it and don't make excuses.

Desean must still be injured or something. Jeter has been so ineffective in the passing game. Every time we throw the ball his I wonder why Desean isn't out their.
