Orgeron is considered cheap when compared to the people we were looking at. So you can look at two things:

If Orgeron succeeds, who in the hell he'll is going to poach him from his dream job? The man picked Alleva up and carried him around the room when he was hired.

If he fails miserably, we are out a few million dollars, and worst case is 8 wins with our talent .

The safe pick to be sure, but a smart one.

Have you seen his buyout?

Yeah his buyout is very puzzling to say the least. I really don't understand why there is a buyout at all to be honest. It's not like Orgeron had any leverage in negotiations. I'm not taking a shot at Orgeron by saying that either, just being honest.

I never understand being afraid to hire a coach who might take another job down the road. If he does good enough for other teams to want, then ultimately it's a successful hire. Winning is what matters, not keeping a guy long term. I could care less if its his dream job or not. We'd at least have a chance to negotiate a better contract before he left.

He will also leave the next coach with plenty of talent. The man can straight up recruit. As big of a failure as he was at Ole Miss Nutt won with a lot of his players the first couple of years after he left.

Any agent worth their salt will have a buyout in his clients contract. Doesn't his buyout decrease a ton after year 3 anyway? Every coach should be allowed at least three years. Who are we? Auburn.

Orgeron shouldn't have a buyout of more than a million dollars

And it's the right thing to do. If you want class from your employees, you have to treat them with class.

I wanted Jimbo, but Orgeron and Herman were even in my mind for second, and I wanted either of them way ahead of guys like Fleck, Gundy, Ferora, etc. So...I'm not an O/Alleva hater at all.

Having said that...O surprisingly isn't very cheap, and his buyout absolutely shocked me. O's base plus incentives is nearly the same as Miles. Miles base salary was around 4.3 with $850k in bonus incentives. Orgeron's base is 3.5 with 1.5 in bonus incentives. Obviously, without knowing the incentive details, it's hard to judge this though. But, one of the selling points of O was he was cheaper so the assistants could make more. Well, when all of the details are released, I'll be very surprised if Orgeron plus staff don't make a substantial amount more than Les plus staff.

HC OC and DC combined you might be right but some of the lower end assistant coaches are cheaper than they have been in years passed.

Any new head coach hire has to be evaluated in terms of both money and opportunity cost. Also, it has to be evaluated in terms of not just dollars and opportunity but in YEARS of commitment, the last of which is arguably the most important for a successful program.
If The Orgeron is NOT successful, his choice will likely set us back by three-four years, minimum, depending upon how quickly and spectacularly he fails. This assumes the program continues as a clean program and that the lack of success doesn't create a falloff in recruiting success, which is quite an assumption. The jaw dropping buyout exacerbates the risk of failure.
I hope Da Coach O succeeds, but do not under-estimate the risk Alleva took here.
