Going through Mobile and I65?

Going through Birmingham and I59?

Every time I go to Atlanta or Athens, I have taken 65, such a boring arse ride, thinking about doing 59. Any thoughts? I know one needs to time traffic in either Bham, Montgomery, or Atl.

I am leaving from New Orleans.

they are all boring....I-10 to 65 to 85 is better, or the lesser of the evils.

Don't really care about the "boring" route. I want the fastest!

Almost.

I-10 to 65 to 285 around the city is better.

Being as you don't know how to change a flat tire, I wouldn't wander too far off beaten path if I were you.

I actually know where Saban's house is (I'm not a stalker - my aunt and uncle live in his neighborhood and pointed it out last time I was there).

To me 85 straight through the city is the easiest. You might save a few minutes on 285 depending on the time of the day but I'd still go with I85.

Going through town is almost always a nightmare these days and at all times of the day.

If you are going to Athens it makes no sense to go up 85 to 316. 28 to 78 is faster and easier.

But you OTP people have no idea.

You should map out cutting over to Greenville in TN and picking up I85, might save you from going through ATL. Plus it'd be a beautiful drive across the mountains. I'm not sure what that would do time wise but it's worth exploring.

yeah, depending on timing (plus you still are going 85 from Montgomery to perimeter of course)--285 can be a nightmare, but if they stick to just the small stretch of 285 east to get from 85north to 20 east, it should be bearable.

note: Montgomery interstate traffic is non-existent really. Birmingham can be nasty in rush hour.

also, 85 and 316 north of atlanta are nasty. people pay ridiculous sums to get in the express lane up there (have to have a peach pass).

So, in short, I would probably go the mobile/montgomery route and then go I85 to I285 east to I20 to exit 113 (hwy 83) through the little town of Madison on 278/441 (78 sucks bad. avoid avoid avoid) stay on 441/129 into athens.

Anyone doing this make sure you take I-459 to I-20 when you approach Birmingham.

Also, I-20 from about exit 191 (US 431 exit) to the state line is rather dangerous.Lots of hills and curves. Bad wreck with 4 18 wheelers Monday shut it down most of the day, so I think its a safe bet that the state troopers will patrolling this stretch rather closely.
