Was it 2012? They never fell out of the top 10 and were competitive in all three losses.

2015 until we played Bama and fell off the map. That 2012 team should have won it all though

Weren't we the 1 seed in the first CFP poll in 2015?

When was the last time LSU was a relevant, national threat?

I thought 2013 would be the Tigers' year. LSU won its first three games by huge margins and Mett was clicking on all cylinders. The next game vs Auburn also started off great with the Tigers forging a 21-0 lead early. The second half of that game showcased defensive woes, which hit home the next week at Georgia.

in football?
In 2015 they were 7-0 and ranked very high going into the Bama game. Lots of national media had the Tigers in their playoff predictions, they were on the cover of SI, and Fournette was, at the time, the shoe-in for the Heisman.
Things didn't finish well, but for over half that season, they were definitely a relevant national threat.

2012 was a classic Chavis drive away from playing Georgia for a shot at beating the shite out of Norte Dame.
2015 they were relevant and Brandon Harris was coming around as the guy who we thought he could be until Bama broke him and his will.

I think we were #2, not #1, but if we're going to go by silly rankings that overrated us, why go all the way back to 2015? We were in the top 5 going into the opener last year against Wisconsin.

We were thought to be, but we weren't. We hadn't played anybody other than Florida, our defense was showing a lot of vulnerability and our offense was still too dependent on overpowering inferior defenses with the running game. Alabama didn't break that team, they simply exposed it. The 2015 team was never any threat to win the national championship regardless of record and ranking resulting from playing a weak schedule through the first seven games.
The last time we had a team that was actually capable of winning a national championship was 2012, but giving up the last minute drive by Alabama destroyed that.

I wasn't being a smartass, I was simply pointing out that being overrated and ranked highly means nothing, and certainly doesn't mean you're a legitimate national threat. LSU was never a legitimate threat in 2015 and the first time we played a team that was, we got mauled. And two other teams that certainly weren't NC caliber also beat us soundly.

2011 before JJ replaced Lee.

It's a matter of definitions. "Legitimate" in my mind means you are in the thick of the race and you deserve to be. 2015 was supposedly in the race at #2, but certainly didn't deserve to be, even though the 7-0 record seemed to indicate otherwise. A team that breezes through a weak schedule and gets ranked highly because they are undefeated, even though they have no chance of winning the title, is not legitimate simply because of that inflated ranking. At no time in 2015 was LSU the second-best team in the country, or even one of the 10 best.

The playoff committee rankings in November are kind of different than preseason AP and coaches polls.
