What homerun hires have been made in basketball the last decade?

Outside of blueblood type programs.

I mean homerun at the time of the hire.

All I see are old retreads and mid-majors.

There have been some, but they are rare. P5 to P5 doesn't happen often.

Are you saying that it's not possible for a MM to P5 to be considered a Home Run hire? Because that's what it sounds like you're saying.

We need to learn to walk before we learn to fly. Let's focus on getting some base hits. We don't have to have a homerun hire to be successful.

Va Tech - A team that had just finished 9-22 and dead last in the ACC hired Buzz Williams, a guy who had been to the NCAA tournament 5 of the previous 6 years at Marquette

SMU - A perennial bottom dweller in conf. USA hired HOFer, Larry Brown, to take over their program.

TCU - A team that was coming off of last place finishes in the Big 12 3 of the last four years hired Jaime Dixon from Pitt. He had taken Pitt to the NCAAT 11 of 13 years there.

S. Carolina - One of the worst programs in the SEC at the time hired Frank Martin away from K-State where he was a regular in the NCAAT

Possible, but rare. Do you think Mike White was a homerun hire?

He looks like one now, but I don't think he was at the time.

I also don't think Steve Prohm was, at the time.

My real point is that no one knows what a home run hire is.

Well yeah, no one can read the future. People can make educated guesses though.

I thought Mike White was a very good HC even while at LaTech.

Yes. And thought so at the time.

I'm still not convinced that he is.

Texas hiring Shaka was considered an absolute homerun at the time.

That's a good list.

Larry Brown restored SMU's program, and then got them put on probation, then got fired.

The other three are definitely home runs.

Yes, Shaka is a good one. Shows how hard it is. They were the worst team in the Big 12.

For me, Oklahoma pulling Lon Kruger from UNLV. He has been successful at every major program he has coached.

There are others, but these would be high on my list:

Tony Bennett - UVA

Jay Wright - Nova

Brad Underwood - OK St. (my prediction is that this will be a HR hire, although he may bolt for KSU if it opens up this year)

Prohm - Iowa St.

A Mamadou Ndiaye-less Auburn hired 2 time SEC Coach of the year Bruce Pearl off his show cause.

Texas fired perennially disappointing Rick Barnes and got Shaka Smart.

Mississippi State somehow convinced Ben Howland to go coach there.

None of those are working too great.

And all three had been fired from their previous jobs.

It doesn't always work out as 711 pointed out, but in fairness all those guys have what 2 year time frames. LSU will need at least that if they make a HR hire to even get average as also indicated by the four aforementioned HR hires.
