What flipped the media switch from LSU hate to love?
Posted by penman on 9/3/15 at 8:26 am72
Early talk, preseason mags, and general media hype had Tigers as lower rung in the West, and certainly not in the conversation for SEC Champs or Playoffs. It's as if we all entered the Twilight Zone together and the SAME team is suddenly the hot choice of the experts. Does anyone know what happened? Is there a secret video circulating that tells the story?

Boredom.

Not many of these guys would have footage or knowledge of what Lsu looks like in all the closed practices. Herbstreet might have a few sources dropping some small bits of info but there can't be any way some of the other talking heads have any idea what they are going with. I'm having a hard time discovering where this is coming from.

Perhaps one of them actually looked at film or saw some of a practice instead of parroting each other ad nauseum. Frankly though, I'm going to have to see II in the first 3 games to believe it.

I wouldn't necessarily call ESPN experts.

If our boys go 3-0 at beginning of the season... It's ours

SEC network came in and got to see more practice than anyone in the BR local media has this fall camp and word spread that brandon harris is doing all the right things.
ESPN talking heads caught wind of his progression and here we are.

I'll just say this...I'm glad Harris will start. But I will need to see two things before I'm a born again, dyed-in-the-wool believer in our offense.
I need to see what happens once SEC play starts. When Les and his team are hunkered down against a quality opponent, will the alleged talk of the Pistol formation and Harris and his ability to throw it be more than just the talk we've heard incessantly each Fall Camp? Talk about everything from JJ9 looks like Montana to Zach Lee may unseat him to 2009's Les comment about, "this will be the best OL we've had since I've been here," type stuff.
In other words, stuff that has no basis in the reality we saw on the field?
Unfortunately, we won't see it vs. McNeese because Les thinks that by somehow locking down the offense he's saving State and Auburn from seeing what we'll do. Which means we won't have as much experience running the entire package since we'll be unfolding it against them for the first time.
Secondly, I want to see what happens once Brandon makes a mistake or forces a throw. What will Les' reaction be. Can he tolerate a kid's inexperience (that Les' largely responsible for anyway) and allow him to work through it and grow from it? We shall see.
Personally, the only way I'd believe if I were an LSU Fan whose kept up with this program under Miles is if I got some sort've smoke signal that Les was completely relinquishing the method he's devised for playcalling and gameplanning and allowing others to take the reigns in that respect.
I have heard of no such thing, so I'll have to see it to believe it.

That, and they have read PCT and monsterballads' posts for the last year.

Going from Anthony Jennings (the worst qb in the sec) to Brandon Harris (potential through the roof) is the cause for extreme hope. Les Miles has been good qb play away from at least 2-3 more national titles. Harris has the potential to not only be a good qb but a great qb. Pretty simple.

There is no denying the top to bottom talent that this team has. The difference is at QB, and Herby knows a lot about Harris, who was really close to signing with Ohio St out of high school and absolutely killed it at a Buckeye camp where he was far and away the best player. You saw glimpses of greatness from Harris last year as a true freshman. It just wasn't his time. They know that we just need someone who can get the ball to our receivers and keep a defense honest for our stable to run down hill.
Mates, I think we have a guy that can do that and then some. I said a couple of years ago that he was the best HS QB I've seen in person, and I have seen several really good ones from the area. We are in for a good season IMO.

It's merely a well-established media ploy that incites controversy among viewers by praising a team who might not necessarily be at the top of their respective sport.
These sort of things go through cycles. When LSU was on top, there were many prognosticators and analysts who would highlight teams on the lower end of the top-10 or just outside of it. LSU fans have championed the meme "ESPN hates LSU" because of these particular occurrences throughout LSU's remarkable run over the past decade. Whenever Herbstreit remarked on the defensive prowess of a Pac-12 or Big-10 team, he was said to be demonstrating West Coast or Midwest bias and was therefore disrespecting the achievements of the SEC.
There was a time, as recently as just a five or six years ago, when the Big-10 was the most routinely covered conference in the FBS. However, over the last few seasons, the cycle has dictated that the SEC receive the bulk of the coverage. Don't think for a moment that the conference's overall success since 2007 is solely responsible for this coverage shift. After all, there is always an agenda at work.
If ESPN or any sports media outlet limited their coverage to only a couple of teams, which they admittedly do in professional sports more often than not (e.g. big market franchises), then they would eventually lose interest and viewership.
Don't read too much into this, folks. This is intended to generate buzz, talking points, and responses (the more extreme the better), from audience members. The same thing is being done right now with the presidential nominees.

IDK but I am so fricking pumped for this season! If Harris flops I may get suicidal, that's how emotionally invested in Harris balling out this season!
